I worked with David for over 20 years at various publishing houses and packagers. His vast knowledge, experience and enthusiasm for the print industry really was second to none. His kindness, patience, understanding and humour meant our relationship transitioned from supplier, to mentor and good friend. I don't think anyone ever championed Green Android as much as David did. I will be forever grateful for his support and encouragement.
I tried to find a photograph of us together to post with this, but they all showed us drunkenly laughing our heads off at some Bologna / Frankfurt / London restaurant. This is how I will choose to remember him. RIP, my friend.
My condolences to Val, Caroline, Stuart and Jess.

Its so hard to know where to start. I first got to know David in 1996 when I started working for a Treehouse. What he didn’t know about print and production wasn’t worth knowing and he was always very happy to share his knowledge. I learnt so much from him.
I soon realised he was working long hours when he was in the office about 2 hours after we got in approx. 6 am USA time, 11 am UK time just so he could catch both his UK customers as well as the printers in the Far East. Over the next 15 years we would regularly dissect the F1 races before eventually getting on to business and what we really needed to talk about. Once he found out I was a Montoya fan he did nothing but take the mick out of me.
Meeting up with David at Book fairs was always good fun and he certainly made the Fairs more tolerable. There was always a lot of laughter and a fair amount of alcohol involved.
I hadn’t seen David for a few years as life takes a different path but I thought of him often and have the fondest memories of him. The kindest and generous man you will ever meet. RIP David and my condolences to Val, Caroline, Stuart and Jess.

I met David in 2000 when I joined Emma Books. He was charm itself, ever cheerful and ready for a joke but most importantly for me, a wonderfully patient instructor in the mysteries and vagaries of printing and shipping co-editions of novelty children’s books. His vast experience and his long-standing relationship with David B, Richard and Christine made for a dynamic and stimulating working relationship. I feel privileged to have known David and have wonderful memories of him either at book fairs, in Somerset or at his office in Connecticut and of the generous hospitality that he and Val showed when I stayed with them.
A unique and lovely man ... he will be much missed.

David was never short of conversation, or an irreverent joke or two, and me being new to this publishing lark, he not only looked after my print, but also me in that he knew everybody at publishing fairs, and kindly introduced me to everybody. So, we’re at the Bologna Book Fair and one night, after dinner, David and I wandered, or wobbled, over to the Pink Bar in Bologna. A regular haunt of publishing types and their acolytes, the place to be seen, the place that was open till 4 in the morning, the place that made all it’s money in one week for the rest of the year…where David introduced me to Ron Van De Meer, Rod Campbell, and David…? This is a moment I’d have emailed David to fill in the gap.
Anyway, they were publishing royalty, and a wonderful night was had by all.
They became good friends because of David. At the next Bologna Book Fair, I managed to acquire a couple of armchairs and a table to fancy up my stand.
One day, they all, David, Ron, Rod, David, descended on the stand, occupying my ‘posh’ guest section, where, with another close friend Duncan Beal, transformed Rockpool Children’s Books into the Comedy Club…whilst I, in the background tried to sell books.
I didn’t sell anything, but it was one of the best book fair days ever, and David, I have to say, was in his element! Sleep sound my friend, you’ll be sorely missed!

On September 24, 2016, at this precise spot (see picture) at the wedding of his daughter Caroline, I asked David for his blessing on my plan to ask his (other) daughter Jess to marry me. He gave it enthusiastically and remarked “isn’t she (Jess) wonderful?” I was in complete agreement. I insisted on commemorating the moment with a toast and I managed to smuggle in a couple glasses of a Wild Turkey bourbon (neat of course). Although it wasn’t his drink of choice, he was a good sport and choked it down. Five months later (to the day!), I proposed to Jess and the rest is history. David was a wonderful father-in-law. He taught me about the Black Death, European football, and how to outwit customer service representatives. We will miss him dearly.

One of my favorite memories of David is when we were all together in Skaneateles, NY for 4th of July a few years back. David, a soccer fan and specifically a Liverpool fan would always start up a conversation about my team, Roma and their place in the champions league etc. That weekend he reminisced about his trips throughout Italy and the rest of the world while traveling for business. He also recalled stories of his youth in England and some of the music festivals he attended and the fun times he had. I listened like a little boy being told a bedtime story while he drank his Campari and Grapefruit and I, a Negroni. I will truly miss him and cherish those stories and the times we spent together.
