To The Dineley Family:
As President of the Grey Eagles we are saddened to learn of the passing of John. On a personal note, I flew with John when I was based in New York. It was a pleasure working with him. He was a pilots pilot and I had the utmost respect for him. Pilots like John were filled with wonderful stories of a life that those left behind now cherish.
Your family is in our thoughts and prayers. We wish you peace.

This photo of John encompasses all he was and still is. He was forever joyful, loved life, his family, friends, and his AA family. John was high on life and lived it to the fullest. He would carry us as his crew with this dynamic personality on his coattails through each day we spent with him on board was a gift. So much laughter, pranks, enjoyment, and a true gentleman. He loved his job and was considered by all to be a Captain's Captain. Oh, how I looked forward to a month on the bid sheet seeing his name! How blessed I felt! I know that I speak for many of the Flight Crews who cherished John as a unique, uplifting, and caring individual who only comes along once in a lifetime. His loss is profound especially for his wonderful family, and by extension," his 'crews". Although he leaves a huge void in all of our hearts, he will forever keep us laughing and smiling with the incredible person and friend John. 'Everyone was special to him and he leaves a wake in the clouds as his soul soared to join his Lord and Saviour. No rest for you John, you have many loved ones who need your guidance as you join the ranks of Guardian Angel and trade your metal wings for new ones. Thank you to John's family for sharing him with us at AA!

John was my neighbor across the street for many years. It was such a pleasure that he would stop his car and roll down the window when I was walking my dog and say good morning or how many walks is this? Always cheerful and always smiling. Always helping others. They don’t come any better. He will be missed.

It was always a pleasure to fly with John. I flew with him both during my time as a Flight Engineer and as a CoPilot with American. I learned a lot from watching him handle the many mechanical, weather and human problems we encountered. He was always in charge and firmly in command while always making those who worked with and under him feel included, important and assured. He was a Captain's Captain, for sure. I shamelessy copied many of his approaches to problems when my turn came to be the Captain.
Fondly,
Bob Pustell

John was probably the best pilot I have ever flown with. He treated every crew member as if they were a special person. When you flew with him, he always remembered your name and greeted you like you were someone special. I will never forget him. AA was so lucky to have such an amazing pilot. John, there will never be anyone like you. RIP.

John was extended family so I only knew him later in life. All of my interactions with John made me wish I knew him longer. He was enthusiastic, smart, funny and handsome. I saw him be a great father to his children, a wonderful grandfather to his grandkids and a loving and supportive husband to his beautiful wife. John was an all-around exemplary human being. This world will miss him. Wishing him well on his next journey wherever that may be.

It is with great sadness to learn of Johns passing. John and I flew together on many occasions while serving with 412 Sqn ( the VIP Sqn) in Ottawa, Canada. He was extremely popular, a knowledgeable, dedicated, smooth and unflappable Pilot, he was and is admired by all that knew him. He and Marilyn were frequently in demand at friends dinners and hosted many outstanding parties of their own. My wife, Shauna, maintained an almost weekly letter correspondence with Marilyn right up to the week she passed away, we continued to keep in touch with John ever since. It is hard to accept that people like John need to be taken, his kind are needed in this world to keep the balance and to understand the importance of loving what you do.

What a joy it was when the bid results revealed a pairing with one of the nicest, most engaging and skilled people American Airlines ever hired. Sad to know the world is missing his presence.

John and I were only 1 or 2 new hire classes apart at American when we were hired in 1964. One of my fondest memories of John was a 3 day trip we flew together in the “400 Astrojet “ (BAC 111) when I was based in New York. I was just senior to Captain John and screw schedule reassigned John to fly as my copilot. Even though it was winter on the East coast and the weather was lousy with wind, snow, and low visibility John and I had a very enjoyable time flying that trip and swapping seats every leg, of which there were many! John was a superb airman and a true gentleman and it was an honor to have flown with him! RIP, Jim Piper

I flew as John's FO many times, and took away a great deal of wisdom from watching a truly great Captain ply his trade. I know that I strived mightily to make his job easy, and I learned much from the man. Not just about flying, but a myriad of techniques on how to work with the flight crew, agents, Dispatch, and the passengers. In my 18 years in the left seat for AA, I unabashedly tried to be as good of a Captain as John was.

It was with much sadness that I heard of John‘s passing and I will miss him very much. He was the most kind and thoughtful man.
John was always ready to help anyone who was in need and he would readily volunteer to help at any Aspetuck function.
We had many fun dinners together before Covid hit. Even though Covid stopped our dinners, every few weeks he would show up at my door with a Costco chicken and weekly coupons for the food pantry. They just showed how thoughtful he was.
My sympathy to all of his wonderful family. We have all lost a very good man and a good friend. May the Lord bless you all.
