Condolences to the family and I will be praying for you. Mr Ziegler was my AP Psychology teacher at Bassick High School 10 years ago. He was more than a teacher to me: he was a father figure. He cared about my success and encouraged me to focus on school. He just didn't ask me about my perfomance in school, he also asked about my well being and my life at home. He was too caring that I made sure to go to class to learn something from him. He was also funny and just nice to be around. His laugh was divine....it calmed you even when you were angry. I loved the way he broke down some difficult psychology vocabulary just to help me learn. Even if you didn't like his class, you ended up liking it because he knew how to teach the subject so well. He would always remind us to atleast learn one thing from his class. I will miss you so much my teacher and may the almighty God recieve you. Like you always told us " I love my students even when they dont finish their homework." This is so true. You love us your students. And we surely loved you back. You were patient with us. You understood that we were students and human too.
I will miss you so much.
Your former student

Former teacher.
Colleague .
Friend.
You were one of my FAVORITE teachers in high school and one of the few that I kept in touch with once I graduated and even after I worked in the Bridgeport School System .
I will always cherish your sense of humor and the perspective you would give in true ziggy man fashion if I ever told you I was pissed off
“it’s better to be pissed off than pissed on”
You clowned everybody, both students and staff alike . Nobody was safe
I still think about when you taught us about REM sleep and dream psychology in AP psychology and gave us the assignment to write down our dreams as soon as we wake up because contrary to what we may remember, we always have dreams. I still do that from time to time
I remember that time you entered me to compete on “the challenge “ cause you said I was one of the smartest kids in the school and when we got there you said “don’t make me look dumb”
I’ll never forget when I couldn’t choose my prom photo package because I wanted a little bit from every package and you created the FELICAN package so I can have everything I wanted!
So many memories with you. You were more than a teacher . Whenever you would see my sisters and I, it was always so much LOVE ! Such an incredible loss. Love you forever. May your soul rest peacefully , eternally. We will miss you.

I worked with Pete for many years at Bassick and later at Adult Education at Central High School. I remember his year of student teaching, and how impressive he was as a educator even that early in his career. He rose to the level of assistant principal based on his drive and commitment to public education. He will be missed.

I met Pete when I became Bassick principal in 1997. He was finishing his teaching internship and was so impressive that I kept him in the school as a long-term substitute so that I could be sure not to lose touch with him. When we had a Social Studies opening at the end of the year, I called HR and told them not to bother to send anyone to interview, because I had my teacher.
Pete had the rare ability to turn ideas into reality. No matter how grandiose our ideas for creating the “Finest Urban High School” at Bassick, Pete found a way to implement them. First, Pete discovered that we could apply for a Small Learning Communities (SLC) grant from the feds. Then he supervised implementing our successful program (Brown University was contracted to evaluate these grants and were so impressed by what they saw at Bassick that they asked us to present at their annual SLC conferences and sent other schools to visit us.). Eventually, we were called to Washington to explain how we had achieved our miracle transformation.
While my memories of Pete are centered around our work, my most cherished ones are those spent after we had finished our work discussions. Pete stopped into my office each afternoon to update me on his projects and to see if there was anything that I needed him to do. After we finished our discussions, we fell into the conversations that friends do. Pete would listen to my hopes for the Yankees winning the next World Series (These were the Derek Jeter years), and Pete would tell me everything he felt I needed to know about Jimmy Buffet (confirming that Pete was a proud Parrothead).
I am sad that there will not be any new memories, but I am grateful for those I will cherish. My condolences go to his family and friends and to the Bassick community. I know that Mr. Ziegler would want you all to do your best every day and to “Be Exemplary!”

My deepest condolences to the entire Ziegler family. Pete and I began our careers together at Bassick as first year teachers. He was always great to have as support and to bounce ideas off of. I know from working with him for so long how much he truly loved his family. I kept in touch with Pete over the years when I moved on, and he was always there whenever I needed anything. During some difficult times personally, Pete was one of the few who continued to be there for me and never turned his back on me. That is something that will live with me forever. That is who he was, someone that was always willing to help others. He will be truly missed. During this difficult time, please take comfort in the fact that he had a tremendous impact on those he met while he was here. My deepest sympathies for your loss.

Peter, better known as Pete was a great employee and friend. He went above and beyond to truly care for not only students but his staff also. He taught me many life lessons pertaining to work and my personal life. He was very passionate about his work ethic, and his career. A true educator, he enjoyed to enrich people with knowledge. This pertained to not only students but staff as well. In this world today it is hard to meet great people to work with. It was a pleasure to work with Pete, for the time I was at Central High. He was a very driven man. He had a special way to light up a dark room with his charming personality and jokes. A staple in the School Community for Bridgeport Schools. It takes a special person to not judge a book by its cover. He was that kind of person, which is why I will admire and miss dearly. I can say with confidence, Pete touched many students lives as well as staff, he will be truly missed. Prayers for his family and to his very close friends, may god give the strength to all who will struggle grieving his loss. With the deepest condolences may god be with the family to help guide and heal them through these dark times.
Sincerely,
Marissa Colon

To the Ziegler Family: Pete is the first person I met and interviewed with in 2015 as I prepared to repatriate from 20 years of overseas teaching. I was so impressed with his answers and love of the Bridgeport City Public Schools and Kids, I pursued the position to work at Central High School where I remain. Pete was right when he believed I would love working here and that I would fit right in. For the years we overlapped at Central High, he always immediately provided support to me when I reached out with efficiency and follow-up to ensure my requests were taken care of in a timely manner despite not being my direct supervisor. Pete also provided advice and support on a few occasions where I was struggling with an issue with my high school son. Pete treated me with the utmost of respect and professionalism and I always appreciated his presence, friendship, advice and leadership. His untimely, too early passing is deeply saddening. I wish you all peace during this difficult time.

I have known Pete for the past 15 years! We worked together at CHS and BHS. I really liked him and respected him. He kept it real at all times and was a straight shooter which is why we got along so well. Straight shooters are few and far between these days and harder and harder to find by the day. RIP Pete. You are gone but not forgotten. My condolences to his friends and family!

We met in High School. Our lockers were a few down from each other. Every morning we all hung out before first bell. We'd discuss world weekly news, and laugh. He worked at the one hour photo shop in the New London Mall, I, at Bradlees. His shop was definitely more fun to be in. Pete was a good guy..We are all better people for having him in our lives. Rest easy friend

I met you my first day as a substitute at Bassick years ago. I remember sitting in on your class in the auditorium; yours was the only class I saw students hurrying to get to. Loved your style and said to myself that's the kind of teacher I had always wanted to be coming from a family of educators. While I was doing security for BOE I discovered that you had made Assistant Principal and was at Central. May have been a bad joke but I reminded you of Spock's conversation with Kirk from the Wrath Of Kahn telling him he should have not taken the promotion to Admiral and should have stayed in the Captain's chair which was his first and best calling. I was very proud of you getting your props and even more now finding out you started out as a Substitute Teacher. Even more proud of you making it back to Bassick. I will miss you dear friend and thank you for all you did for me; most of all the friendship.
