Obituary of Charles A. Griebell
Milford, CT – Charles A. Griebell, age 85, died peacefully on Saturday, December 19, 2020 after a courageous battle with cancer. He was a beloved husband, father, and grandfather. He was a graduate of Bryant High School in Queens, New York and went on to receive his bachelor's and master's degrees in electrical engineering from New York University in 1958 & 1960.
Charles and Lorraine were married in 1958 and enjoyed 62 wonderful years together. Upon graduating from college, Charles served as an officer in the United States Army, stationed at Fort Monmouth, New Jersey. In a career spanning over 40 years, Mr. Griebell won respect and admiration as an engineer, inventor, manager, marketer and trusted right-hand-man. His projects at Sperry included the first telecom connected traffic control system in NYC, giving the city the ability to time green lights. At Western Union, he was instrumental in leading telecom efforts of Westar, the first commercial communications satellite launched in the United States. Following leadership roles at ITT and Black and Decker, Mr. Griebell's last position was at Transwitch Corporation, a global developer and global supplier of high-speed semiconductor solutions. Mr. Griebell was instrumental in the company's marketing efforts, helping lead the company from start-up to a successful NASDAQ public stock listing. Charles retired from Transwitch in 2003. Mr. Griebell credited his ability to have a great work life balance to a short commute, allowing him to spend time with the family and coach soccer. Charles was instrumental in the formation of Trumbull United in 1982, the town's first competitive travel soccer team.
Following Mr. Griebell's retirement, he and Lorraine have been busy renovating a 100-year-old Victorian home and traveled extensively throughout the United States and Europe. Mr. Griebell had a wide array of interests and hobbies including walking on the beach, tutoring his children and grandchildren in math, watching the UConn Women's basketball team, making original videos, and technology "in general."
