Born in Port Chester, N.Y. on July 15, 1930, she was the daughter of the late John and Rosalie (Killilea) Hanssler. With her husband Michael, Joan was an avid sailor and a proud member of the Housatonic Boat Club in Stratford. Joan was also the first female Commander of the Manhasset Bay Power Squadron, an association dedicated to boating education and safety. During retirement, Joan participated in many volunteer activities including helping with theater productions and social gatherings, being a member of the Oronoque Architecture Club, teaching AARP driver safety courses, and with her husband Michael Pappas, teaching computer classes and providing computer technical assistance to Oronoque Village residents. Joan was a loving and devoted wife, mother, stepmother, sister, grandmother, great-grandmother, volunteer, and friend of many.
