Unfortunately, I never met my good friend and colleague Barbara Bartlik's mother, Joan. I've known Barbara for many years, and she often spoke of her mother. They were close, and Barbara was a devoted and caring daughter who visited often and looked after her mother in her final years. More recently, from Barbara and from reading Joan Pappas' obituary, I came to understand how much Joan had achieved in her 90 years, starting back when most women did not achieve as Joan did. I regret that I never did meet her. I offer my sincere condolences to the family and friends of Joan Pappas, as I did already to Barbara. May she rest in peace.
