I’ve struggled with what to say. How could anyone express what Uncle Ray meant to so many? To his wife of 60 years, Aunt Norma, his eight children, his grandchildren, his family and friends. He was also like a second father to so many others as well. A true legend who led by example.
Here was a man who took a part-time, high school job and made a lifelong career out of it that touched so many people. Through hard work he was able to raise a family of 8 children and provide them with a beautiful home and life in Monroe. Uncle Ray seemed to love nothing more than sitting at the kitchen table surrounded by his huge family who loved him. But, unlike the old TV show “Eight is Enough”, no matter how many were at the table or in their home, they always had room for one more.
Uncle Ray was a great listener and a man of few words. But when he spoke, he could quiet a room filled with people because his words had meaning.
Although his work never required it, he was a man who valued education deeply and took pride in his own education. However, he was also the type of man who made everyone around him feel important, regardless of their station in life. Everytime I came back home from abroad, Uncle Ray’s and Aunt Norma’s house was always the first place I visited. I’ve always felt welcome in their home. Even coming unannounced, I would never need to call ahead and make sure it was convenient. I could just stop in and they would always make time for me, just like I was one of their own.
His children had always been so proud of him. I remember growing up, playing underneath their back porch, they had set up a makeshift Canteen. We used cardboard, sticks and rocks and made them into hamburgers, hot dogs and fries. The pride they had in their Dad was mutual. He believed in his children very much. So much so in fact, that when he retired he passed on his legacy to his boys when they opened Mr. Mac’s and they never let him down. He was proud of all his children though, never playing favorites.
Retirement only seemed to intensify his life’s meaning, not slow him down. Whether it was serving his community, helping out those in need or just lending an ear. But for the most part, it was about spending time with those he loved, working around the yard, going to ball games or taking lifetime trips to Ireland and Italy. He made the most out of every moment he had on this Earth.
Uncle Ray lives on. He lives on through his children and his grandchildren. He lives on in all our hearts and memories. But most of all, he lives on through a life well lived, never wasting a moment. I believe he would want all of us to continue, doing the same….Rest in Peace.

MY TRIBUTE TO RAY MCPADDEN
I am not able to be with you all today, but I could not bear the thought of not being able to properly say goodbye to a man who meant more to me than any male figure in my life. He was more of father to me than my own. He allowed me to live in his home even with the 8 kids he already had. Memories that I will cherish forever were made in Ray's home. From learning to drive to learning to laugh and learning to love. But most importantly I learned what a real family was, and what it meant to have a "dad". A dad you could talk to about your problems, a dad who wouldn't judge you by your mistakes. a dad who taught you that hard work does pay off , a dad who loved you unconditionally.. I always envied Tara for having such a wonderful dad, but I am also very thankful that I had the privelage to become an "adopted daughter" to Ray and Norma. I know that Ray knew how much I loved him but I dont think he really knew how much of an impact he had on my life .
Unfortunatley it was time for his journey here with us to end and time for him to reach his next destination. He will be reunited with many friends and family and especially Raymond and Michael. And when it is time for our journey to end we can feel at peace knowing that Ray will be there waiting with open arms, and that smile. He will always be with me, and will always be in my heart. I thank you Ray for guiding me and helping me become the woman I am. I love you "dad" and I am sorry I wasnt there to say goodbye .

Dear Norma and Family: It isn't often throughout our lifetime that we find a true gentleman; how fortunate we all have been to have found your Ray for he was a true gentleman in every sense of the word. Whether in business, or his dedication to Lionism, only one of many civic and charitable organizations who were the benefactors of his hard work and dedication to helping those in need and those less fortunate, he always gave more than 100% and didn't understand the word "no". There are so many wonderful stories we could share, but the one closest to our hearts was that every year he would cook up and pack freezer ready a box of hot dogs for our son to go back to college; he always told Ray he couldn't go back without that box of hotdogs - and he never did. Though no longer here with us on Earth, I know somehow he will continue to find a way to make his presence known and watch over all of you lovingly as he did while here with you. Thank you so much for sharing him with so many of us, and may God bless you and your beautiful family for a long time to come.

Mr McPadden, thanks for all the memories at the Canteen, and thanks for letting all us kids hang out there with our hot rods until all hours of the night back in the 1980's. I'll never forget how you used to be able to make the change seemingly "stick" to your fingers when handing it back to customers. You are a wonderful man, with a wonderful family who treated us hotrodders as if we were your own kids. R.I.P, sir. Till we meet again.

We are so saddened to learn of Ray’s passing. Unfortunately the last time we got to see each other’s passing was at the funeral of Jeanne Halpin...we were so touched that he and John made the effort to come, and were so happy to reconnect with him, Norma and some others on the McPadden side of the family at a very sad time.
My family along with the rest of the Halpins send our love, peace and prayers to all.
