Obituary of Joseph J. Saia Jr.

Joseph John Saia, Jr. (Joe), age 86, beloved husband of the late Theresa Piccirillo Saia, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family on July 18, 2024. Joe was born on March 08, 1938, to the late Joseph and Catherine Saia and was a lifelong resident of Bridgeport, CT. He retired from Anthony Julian Railroad Construction Company, Bridgeport, where he worked for over 30 years, and was a Laborers Union Local 665 member.

Affectionately known as "Cigar Joe," our dad loved the outdoors, whether boating on the Long Island Sound with his buddy Frannie, fishing at Seaside Park or the reservoir, hunting in Vermont, or metal detecting at Compo Beach. During the summer, he could be found helping at several bait and tackle stores on Fairfield Avenue in Black Rock, where he ALWAYS had a cigar in his mouth. He was a proud Italian American who grew the most spectacular and bountiful vegetable gardens. He and our mom made every holiday memorable, but our Christmas Eve traditions will remain special for our family for generations to come.

Joe's greatest love was his wife, Theresa, whom he was married to for 59 years before her death in August 2019. Since her passing, not a day went by when he didn't pray to see her again. He missed her every day, and for that, we find great comfort in knowing that they are together again.

Joe was a hard worker and lived a life of simplicity. His love for his family was immense, and this love will continue to warm our hearts. Above all, he taught us all to say, "I love you too," and the importance of family; we are so grateful for that.

Joe was a loving and caring Father to his three girls and their families. Theresa and Paul Marzik of Shelton, Jomarie and Joe Branco of Shelton, and Jennifer and Brian Dickson of Bridgeport. He was Pa to his grandchildren, Stacy (Jake) Horenstein, Jessica (Kevin) Golen, Paul (Lizz) Marzik, Michael Saia (his boy), Joey Branco (Samantha), Erica Branco (Trevor), and Matthew Branco. He was also known as Papa to his great-grandchildren, Quinn and Dylan Golen, Asher and Elliott Horenstein, and Baby Marzik, due in October.

He is survived by his brother-in-law, Vincent Penna, as well as several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Theresa, sister Antoinette, and nephews Vinny and Sonny.

Our family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Jennifer and Brian, whose love, care and sacrifice made it possible for Dad to spend his final days in the comfort of his home, we love you! We would also like to express our gratitude to Hartford Health Hospice for their care.

Relatives and friends may greet the family on Sunday, July 28, 2024 from 1 - 3 p.m. in the Abriola Parkview Funeral Home, 419 White Plains Road, Trumbull. A Prayer Service will take place at 2:30 p.m. in the funeral home. Interment will be private at the convenience of the family.
