Karen and I met when we both worked at Samuel Staples Elementary School in Easton, CT. In her role as a 4th grade teacher, she was the most amazing educator! The children in her classes thrived educationally and personally. She had the magical ability to meet the needs of those who struggled and those who excelled. As a new principal, I also thrived under her care! I could depend on her professionalism, wisdom and sense of humor as guideposts. I was lucky enough to be counted among Karen’s friends. I visited her gardens, and saw the beauty that she created outside of the classroom and in her long marriage to Dick. It seemed that everything she nurtured flourished under her care. To her sons, Chris and David, her daughter-in-laws who were like daughters, and her 7 beloved grandchildren, I send my deepest condolences. You had an incredible mom and grandmother. With love, Donna

Mrs. Fowler holds a distinct place in my heart for identifying some of my learning struggles. As an LD teacher myself, I think of her often for being that person to champion learning challenges. Especially at a time that was not so prevalent. What an amazing educator.

My condolences to the family. On a trip back to New England Nancy and I were able to visit Karen in New Town and share the great memories of our time with her family on Deepdene in Trumbull. She and Dick were some of our favorite people.

Our hearts are broken knowing that our friend and fellow Florida Sunrise Cove condo resident Karen Fowler has passed. We loved that woman dearly. To us, she carried the history of Sunrise Cove with her and shared it with us and we are blessed to have learned so much from her. I would like to share just a few cute stories we have about her. Much of this will only be understood by her fellow residents at Sunrise Cove condos. But all will appreciate what a sweet soul she was.
She was one of the first residents we met when we first arrived at Sunrise Cove in 2017. We first owned a 1BR unit 111, right near the elevator she had to use to get to her “apartment” in 515. Karen called them apartments. So she was right outside our door when waiting for the elevator and we met her. Kind of easy. She was Karen . My wife is Karen. Easy to remember she said. Being the kind soul that she was, and without really knowing us, she immediately offered car service to the airport if we were to ever need it. But she quickly qualified that was to the Sarasota airport, not Tampa that would be an hour away. I still laugh when I think of that.
Karen always enlightened us newer owners with the history at Sunrise Cove. God Bless her for that as there is a bit of “family” that some of us feel here in our seasonal homes and it can be lost if we do not try to carry that forward if we can. She described how long ago she and her Mother had condos elsewhere on Siesta Key, and they were the first involved when the Sunrise Cove was first being developed in the early 70’s. With that, she relayed was how the first owners had to choose the furniture they wanted from semi trucks parked in the parking lot. Was it the “Florida pink” version or was it the blue choice. Because of her and her Mother’s past ownership, she now also owned a 1BR unit 212 in addition to her 515 unit. She called that 1BR a “deluxe” 1BR as the MBR enjoyed the water view of Little Sarasota Bay while the other 1BR units like we had in 111 had the bedroom in the back facing the elevators. Deluxe is what those units were originally referred to as. Nobody else seems to use those words and that is now lost as the rental program no longer differentiates between the 1BR units as had been the case in the past. Karen described what it was like at Sunrise Cove before Midnight Pass was closed. Blue water with shrimp and crab right outside our door and in front of us in Little Sarasota Bay. Now the politicians are finally awakening to the possibilities of reopening Midnight Pass. Another practice she admitted to was her use of binoculars to see who was at the pool before she headed down there. Smart girl. Plan your visit and know who would like to sit with. In recent years, she wore a bright pink hat while at the pool and we could always look down and know that was her at the pool. And with UCONN so successful in this year’s NCAA tournament we recall that she was also a proud Connecticut girl and a fan. So many more stories. All reflect the lovely soul that this woman had.
God Bless you Karen Fowler. All of us at Sunrise Cove condos in Sarasota Florida will miss you dearly.
