Obituary of Sabatino "Sam" Cortello

Sabatino "Sam" Cortello, age 83, of Seymour and formerly of Bridgeport, beloved husband of the late Dolores "Dee" Basso Cortello, passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Sunday, October 29, 2023. Born in Bridgeport on May 4, 1940, he was a son of the late John and Concetta Rizzo Cortello. Sam graduated from Bullard Havens Technical School. Sam met his sweetheart and soulmate Dee. They were married in September 1962 and shared 53 amazing years together filled with laughter, joy, family and faith before her passing in 2015.

Sam was a U.S. Army veteran. He retired as a Detective for the City of Bridgeport Police Department after 31 years of dedicated service. He was a faithful 4th Degree Knight of Columbus. He was a member of the American Legion Post 141 and notorious Bingo Caller. Sam sang religiously in St. Patrick's Church Choir and yearly the National Anthem at Blue Fish baseball games.

Above all his accomplishments and interests, family was his life. He was a dedicated, loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle. He loved family vacations and Sunday dinners. He was his best when his grandchildren were at his side or sharing treats.

Survivors include his three loving children: Susan Cortello, Louis Cortello Sr. and wife Diane, and Tina Cortello, five cherished and adored grandchildren, Elizabeth and Frank Cuccaro Jr., Louie Jr. and Anthony Cortello and Zachary Braca, two sisters Edith Cascio and Lucy Duva, a sister-in-law, Linda Cortello, brothers-in-law Michael F. Basso and Steve Basso (Diane) several nieces and nephews and extended family Sandra Spadaccino. Marriage joined them together but love made them a family. He was predeceased by his siblings Patricia Leonard, John Cortello, Robert Cortello and brothers-in-law Paul Leonard, Joe Cascio and Tony Duva.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, November 6, 2023 at 10:00 a.m. meeting directly in St. Patrick's Church, 805 North Ave., Bridgeport. Interment will follow in Mountain Grove Cemetery, Bridgeport. Relatives and friends may greet the family on Sunday from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. in the Abriola Parkview Funeral Home, 419 White Plains Rd., Trumbull.
