Obituary of William J. Trutt, Jr.

William J. Trutt, Jr., age 85, of Trumbull and formerly of Fairfield passed away peacefully on Friday, July 21, 2023 at Cambridge Manor, Fairfield. He was the beloved husband of Vera (Schoenemann) Trutt. Born in Brooklyn, NY on October 21, 1937 he was a son of the late William J. and Ann (Clinton) Trutt, Sr.

After graduating from Erasmus Hall in Brooklyn and earning his Bachelor’s Degree from New York University, Mr. Trutt served his country honorably in the U.S. Army. He would later accumulate a long tenure as the Vice President of Reinsurance and had also been employed by GE, ERC, GenRe and SwissRe before his subsequent retirement. While in his 40’s, Bill had also owned Marty’s Steakhouse in Litchfield before ultimately settling in Fairfield in 1985.

An early fan of the Brooklyn Dodgers, Bill later became a Mets fan and a supporter of both the New York Giants and Notre Dame Fighting Irish football teams. He had a gift for conversation and enjoyed a good debate about sports or politics with his dear friends John, Jay, Dick and Doug, with whom he spoke regularly. He could talk to anyone and often those conversations involved speaking about all of his granddaughters’ accomplishments.

His number one priority was his wife, children and grandchildren. Bill and Vera enjoyed summers at Mamanasco Lake in Ridgefield, making memories with family and friends. He loved hosting holiday parties and was always on a mission to locate the perfect Irish toast, usually a little bit cheeky.

A former member of NYAC, he and Vera spent their early retirement years spending Saturday afternoons at the Opera and enjoyed magnificent dinners at the Club. They relished these events, even if it meant Bill took a great nap at the Met so he was fully awake for a fabulous dinner with his wife.

A loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend of many. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

In addition to his beloved wife Vera of 64 years, survivors include his devoted children, Linda Arceri and her husband Louis and William J. Trutt, III and his wife Melanie, cherished granddaughters, Caitlin and Courtney Trutt, his brother-in-law, William Schoenemann and his wife Patricia, as well as childhood friends John, Jay, Dick and Doug and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister, Joan Sheridan.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, July 25, 2023 at 10:30 a.m. in Christ the King Church, 4700 Madison Ave., Trumbull. Interment will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Ridgefield. Friends may greet the family on Monday from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Abriola Parkview Funeral Home, 419 White Plains Rd., Trumbull.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
