Obituary of Jose Rodrigues

Jose Simoes Rodrigues, age 87, of Monroe, beloved husband of Adelaide Gomes Rodrigues, passed away in the comfort of his home on Friday, January 7, 2022 surrounded by his loving family. Born on September 27, 1934 in Pedrario, Portugal, he was a son of the late Joao Rodrigues and Alzira Simoes Rodrigues.

A member of the Portuguese military, Jose immigrated to the United States in 1960, settling in Bridgeport. He was a member of the Laborers Union and was formerly employed by Hi Ho D'Addario. He was a lifetime member of the Vasco Da Gama Club, where he served as a former President and Vice President. He also enjoyed the camaraderie at the club, loved to watch his favorite soccer team F.C. Porto and his favorite baseball team The New York Yankees. He could often be found tending to his garden and his love of masonry work building stonewalls which surrounded the property. Jose's specialty was making his yearly wine with his son and son in laws.

A true family man, he loved his Portuguese heritage and captivated everyone with his detailed stories of growing up in Portugal. He continually instilled the traditions of their heritage to his children and grandchildren. He was a very strong and good-hearted man who would do anything for anyone in need. Above all, there was nothing more important in life to him than his roles as a husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. Family was always his number one priority, the unconditional love he gave and the values he taught will forever live in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.

In addition to his beloved wife of 60 years, Adelaide, survivors include his three loving children, Celeste Puglisi and her husband John, John Rodrigues and Grace Singleton and her husband George all residing in Monroe, six cherished grandchildren, Johnny, Ashley, Niki, Lexi, Gianna and Jonanthan, six adored great grandchildren, Cruz, Luke, Kaia, Leyana, August and Audrianna, two sisters, Celeste Esteves and Berta Chapman; two brothers, Albino Rodrigues, and Alberto Rodrigues; as well as several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a sister, Carminda Pereira, and brothers, Delfin Rodrigues, Mario Simoes and João "Cheech" Rodrigues.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, January 13, 2022 at 10:30 a.m. in Our Lady of Fatima Church, 429 Huntington Road, Bridgeport. Interment will follow in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Trumbull. Relatives and friends may greet the family at a walk-through visitation on Wednesday from 4 – 7 p.m. in the Abriola Parkview Funeral Home, 419 White Plains Rd., Trumbull. Masks and social distance are required.
