Obituary of Matthew J. Areson

December 22, 1975 - January 31, 2021

Matt Areson, beloved son of George and Emily, passed away on January 31, 2021.

Matt was incredibly talented and bright. There wasn't an instrument that he couldn't play. Matt was self-taught, creating music throughout his entire life. He dedicated his days to rebuilding historic pipe organs, tuning pianos, teaching music, and composing with friends. Also an accomplished pilot, Matt shared this passion with his father. His days spent in the cockpit or at an airshow were some of his favorites. Matt's memory was incredible; anyone who knew him would often hear him recite the lines from movies or songs without missing a beat. He was one of the funniest people in the world, and was known for making everyone around him laugh.

Matt counted down the days to celebrate Halloween and Christmas. The fall was the beginning of Matt's favorite time of year, growing his own pumpkins and watching scary movies. During the holidays, Matt happily played Christmas music on the piano and his guitar for the family to enjoy. It brought him so much joy to give the perfect presents to those he loved.

After years apart, Matt was reunited with the love of his life, Athena. They spent the last few years traveling, sharing their favorite movies and making new memories together.

Matt loved spending time with his family and many friends. He is survived by his parents, George and Emily; his siblings, Beth and Dan, and their spouses, Ron and Ali; his niece, Emily Pisarra; his true love, Athena Fontanetta, and her son, Michael; and scores of lifelong friends.

A walk through visitation will take place on Friday, February 5, 2021 from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. at Abriola Parkview Funeral Home, 419 White Plains Rd., Trumbull. Face masks and social distancing will be required as guests enter the building, pay their respects and then exit the building without lingering to allow others the same opportunity. Interment will be held privately for the immediate family.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Matt's name to The Historic Organ Restoration Committee at BoardwalkOrgans.org, to continue his passion of preserving the remaining historic pipe organs in the northeast.
