Obituary of Eleanor B. Mastroni

Eleanor Mastroni, loving spouse and life-long partner of Dorothy Dewhirst, died on April 15, 2020, shortly after her 93rd birthday. Born in Bridgeport in 1927 to Elizabeth and Domenic Mastroni, she graduated from Bassick High School and attended Arnold College. Always self-supporting, she worked many jobs from selling weight loss equipment to teaching ballroom dancing and being a driving instructor. Ellie was employed at the famous Artists School in Westport and tended bar at "The Brooke", several nights a week too. Most enjoyable were the years as a floral designer at Hansen's Family Florist in Fairfield. Ellie had a passion for all sports -- you name it: pond skating, ice dancing & skiing, bowling, golfing, doubles tennis. But softball and golf was where she excelled most. Notably, she traveled to Oregon in 1948 with the renowned Stratford Brakettes Softball Team and was celebrated years later at several "Old Timers' Day" reunions. In 1987, she joined an organized women's golf league at Fairchild Wheeler and Whitney Farms after recording her first (and only) hole-in-one on September 15, 1985 at the Par-3 12th Hole. She went on to win the Whitney Farms Womens' Championship in 1993, and found even more success on a golfing trip to the Olde Course at St. Andrew's in Scotland as the only player to win all of her matches in the international competition. An avid fisherwoman, she spent countless tide-turning hours hooking stripers and flat fish at Fairfield Beach and the memorable Long Beach West Cottage in Stratford. In everything she did, Ellie was always smiling, full of energy with a wry sense of humor, outgoing, loving and generous. She is loved, and will be deeply missed, by so many -- including, Dorrie - her spouse and life-partner for 57 years; brothers James Mastroni (wife Cynthia) of Southbury, Michael Mastroni (wife Nancy); sister Betty Pelletier of Bridgeport, and several nieces and nephews. Predeceased by brothers Joe Mastroni, Anthony Mastroni, Robert Mastroni, Frank Mastroni, Leonard Mastroni; sisters Irene Marshall and Mary Martone.
