It was my honor and pleasure to have started my career working with Joe at Lever Brothers (Unilever) R&D. He is one of my favorite people of all time. I've never met anyone else quite like him. He was an exceptional chemist and really, really funny. He made the work environment really fun; I looked forward to coming to work each day largely because of him. We were all sad when Joe retired - the R&D Center was never the quite same place after he left.
Joe would tell us funny stories about his life, including his time in Europe during World War II. We had no idea that he had liberated concentration camps. As John says, he was very humble. His love for his family was always apparent. I was glad to see that Joe was able to enjoy a long retirement and reach the age of 95.
Colonel Joe, you were, and always will be, the best!!

I was deeply saddened to hear of Uncle Joe’s passing. He was a fun uncle with a great sense of humor. My husband also loved him and they had great times talking about the ponies. Mom knew Uncle Joe for sixty years and they had a lot of laughs and good times together. Godspeed Uncle Joe from Missy,Tommy and Mom

He was brilliant. He was humble. He was strong and yet gentle. He was hilarious, and he was giving. But most of all, he was very, very rare.
Most other people with a fraction of his accomplishments would walk the earth boasting. He was a perfect example that many times, greatness and excellence walks among us, unassuming. Very few people who met him have trouble remembering him.
I could list his accomplishments, and they would not give you a hint of who he was. In fact, I feel sorry for those who never met him. He left the world a much better place. And one of his most remarkable triumphs almost goes unspoken. The depth of his love for my mother was unfailing, absolute and inspiring. I spent a lot of time with him during the four years he had to live without my mother. And the thing that I'm most proud of was the look on the faces of the people he met as he told them of his love for his wife, Marie. You could see him inspire people. They knew they were witness to something special. He reminded us that in this weary world, true undying love is still possible. It is real.
