Obituary of Sophie G. Marshall

Sophia Garby Marshall, age 89, of Trumbull, CT peacefully passed into the arms of God at her home on September 15, 2018 with her devoted daughter, Christine, having cared for her for the past five years. Sophie was born on April 15, 1929 in Bridgeport, CT to Frank and Ksenia Garby. She grew up in Stratford with her sister Ann, brothers Paul, Michael and Stanley. She had a brother John who died when a baby. Her sister and brothers all predeceased her. Sophie married Frederick Walter Marshall on May 7, 1949 in Holy Name of Jesus Church in Stratford. They had a good, loving relationship for 58 years. They had two children, Fred Frank Marshall and Christine. Their son Fred passed in May, 1998 and husband Fred passed in June 2007. Sophie and Fred traveled extensively through the years to places of interest in the United States, Canada, Europe and the islands. Sophie attended Stratford High School. Her first job as a young girl was as a telephone operator at Dennis and Darcy Funeral Home in Stratford. During WWII she worked at Vought-Sikorsky as a "Rosie the Riveter". Sophie later entered the nursing field as a licensed practical nurse. She worked for several years at St. Vincent's Medical Center on med-surg units and later, on a neuro unit, retiring after 24 years. She continued working as an LPN at Carolton Nursing Facility in Fairfield, CT until the age of 80. Sophie was an excellent and well-respected nurse. She was a wonderful and devoted daughter, sister, wife and beloved mother and grandmother. She was a great listener when her son or daughter came to her for advice. She gave both Fred and Christine unconditional love and support through the years. Fred and Christine were blessed to have Sophie as their mother. Sophie was very family oriented and was a fabulous cook, hosting numerous holiday dinners and parties through the years.

She is survived by her loving daughter Christine Abramson, and devoted son-in-law Richard of Trumbull, CT. Loving and devoted grandson Brian of East Haven, CT and Frederick M. Marshall and his family of Thompson, CT. She has one great-grandson Camden Marshall, several nieces and nephews in the New England area and a nephew, Jim Allis and his family in Georgia.

Christine would like to thank special people in her mom's life through the years. Devoted physicians, Dr. Guido J. Napolitano (retired), Dr. Kenneth Maiocco, Dr. Daniel Sica, Vitas Hospice Nursing Staff, and special thanks to Teresa Haviland and Barbara D'Amato for their loving care.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, September 20th, 2018 directly in St. Theresa Church, 5301 Main Street, Trumbull at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow at St. John's Cemetery, 2610 Nichol's Ave, Stratford.
