Obituary of John Kurilec

John Kurilec, age 88 of Trumbull, beloved husband of Helen Bauer Kurilec, passed away peacefully on Monday, July 23, 2018 at the CT Hospice in Branford. Born on March 4, 1930 in Svidnik, Czechoslovakia, he was a son of the late William and Mary Vanuga Kurilec. In September of 1939, at the age of nine and accompanied by his mother and sister, John boarded the SS Athenia to immigrate to America. One day into the voyage, their ship was torpedoed and sunk by a German U-boat in the first hostile actions of World War II. John served his country proudly in the US Army during the Korean War as a 1st Lieutenant. A graduate of Garfield High School in New Jersey, he received his undergraduate degree from Fairleigh Dickinson University and obtained a Master's Degree from Stevens Institute of Technology. He worked for many years at Curtiss-Wright and as Director of Planning and Distribution at Tetley Tea. Above all, he was a loving husband, father, brother, and friend who will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

In addition to his beloved wife Helen of 55 years, he is survived by his two sons, John W. Kurilec and Dr. Jeffrey Kurilec, both of Trumbull. He was predeceased by his sister, Anna Kurilec Loboda.
