“Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.” “Life isn’t fair.” “A word to the wise should be sufficient.”
Sometimes the greatest legacy a father can leave is his advice.
Years ago, I was at a crossroads with a job opportunity. Do I stick with the safe job I know, or take a leap with a new job opportunity? I sat with my dad, he of great financial acumen and a BS meter that was virtually unrivaled on the Eastern coast.
We made a list of pros and cons. Still, I was indecisive. But he had a solution. “You write down your answer. And I’ll write down my answer as well.” I did. We carefully slid our folded denouncements across the table.
As he opened mine, I opened his, which read, “You already know the answer.” I looked up, as he smiled and waved my own unfolded answer in front of me: “Take the leap.”
Son of a gun.
I had the answer all along – and he knew it. But more than that, it felt like a rite of passage into adulthood. I didn’t need his advice for these decisions anymore, and he trusted that I knew what to do.
William J Walko passed away peacefully Sunday, May 13th.
But his advice lives on. And always will.
Nostrovia, dad.
