Obituary of Alvin J. Merando

Alvin J. Merando, age 88, of Monroe and beloved husband of Janet D'Elia Merando of 33 years, passed peacefully on Tuesday, January 16, 2018 at St. Vincent's Medical Center. Born in Bridgeport, CT on September 8, 1929, he was the son of the late Joseph and Fannie Merando. He was a graduate of Central High School. He was employed at Save the Children Federation for 40 years being in the cutting edge of the computer technology world. He received the Distinguished Service Award in 1987 presented by the Board of Directors of Save the Children. He was a Third Degree Knights of Columbus Council No 2287 in New Canaan, CT where he served as Treasurer for 60 years. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus bowling team when they won the championship in 1981 having the highest score. His family was foremost and family celebrations brought much joy. He was a proud cheerleader in all their accomplishments and joys. He was an avid Yankee and Giant fan being armchair quarterback. Alvin was a great husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather who will be truly missed by all who knew him. In addition to his wife Janet, he is survived by his children, Debbie and Michael Gardiner, Linda (and the late James) Wityak, Rev. Dr. James Sabak, OFM, Joann and Michael Catalano, his grandchildren, Brian and Jill Gardiner, Kevin and Mauricia Gardiner, Tara and Stephan Murad, Jennifer and Rick Bailey, Nicholas Wityak, Alexis, Gianna and John Catalano and great grandchildren, Cade, Ava, Bella, Ben, Cameron and Adelyn who brought him much joy. He will be sadly missed by brother and sister-in-law Mr. & Mrs. Dennis Chura of California and Etta D'Ademo of Stamford, CT, his nieces and nephews as well as lifelong friends, Millie Martino and Andy Taraian and all who knew him. He was predeceased by his brothers and sisters- in-law Frank and Tommie Merando and Joseph and Hazel Merando. We wish to express our heartfelt thanks to all of our friends and neighbors who supported him during his years of his illness. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, January 25, 2018 at 10:00 AM directly in St. Jude Church, 707 Monroe Turnpike, Monroe, CT. Interment will follow in St. Michael Cemetery, Stratford. Friends may greet the family on Wednesday, January 24, from 4:00 – 8:00 PM at the Abriola Parkview Home, 419 White Plains Road Trumbull. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Save the Children, 501 Kings Highway East, Suite 400, Farifield, CT 06825.
