Obituary of Otto G. Somogie

Otto G. Somogie, age 92, of Ballston Spa, NY, and formerly of Trumbull, CT, passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 26, 2017. He was the beloved husband of Helen (Salik) Somogie. Born in Fairfield, CT on February 22, 1925, he was the son of the late Otto and Irma (Hodermersky) Somogie. Otto and his wife, Helen, also lived in East Wakefield, NH, and Dunnellon, FL, after retirement. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend; he will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Otto was a World War II Marine Combat Veteran. He served for two years in the Pacific Theater on islands including Guam, Tarawa, and Okinawa. He fought in the last major battle on Okinawa; the results of which were closely tied to the end of the war. He was very proud to be a marine and to have served his country. He enjoyed gardening, fishing, hunting, and being in the great outdoors. He built two of his homes by hand and was able to build, and fix, just about anything. He was outgoing, friendly, and enjoyed chatting with anyone and everyone.

He is survived by his son, Glen Somogie, and his wife, Debbie, of Shelton, his daughter, Ginger Morris, and her husband, Stuyvesant, his daughter, Gwen Somogie, and his youngest daughter, Gaye Somogie, all of Malta, NY. His six cherished grandchildren are Stuyvie Morris, and his wife, Danielle Donovan, Glen Somogie Jr, Jalena Manzino, and her husband, Rob, Amanda Somogie, Hunter Somogie, and Celia Somogie-Barnett. Otto is also survived by his adored great- granddaughter, Vienna Manzino. His best friend was his Shih-tzu, Pooh. He has one surviving sister, Adele, and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife, Helen, he was predeceased by his daughter, Gale Herrera.
