Joan was my aunt, but she was so much more. From 1960, she was basically in charge of the day to day raising of me. She cooked all the meals, a sitting at 4:30 every day for my grandfather, me and herself, and then a second one at 6:00 For my mother and stepfather. The house back then was spotless, all wood and marble surfaces would shine with wax, glasswear would sparkle and there would be the scent of linseed oil. She often sang as she took care of things. It was like living in a pristine Victorian museum. Saturdays were spent tagging along with her grocery shopping, riding along in the cavernous back seat of her 1939, and later 41 Chevy. It was her 58 Plymouth that I first learned to drive. This time of year we'd go for a ride in the country, pick wild flowers, and bring them home to vases around the house. We were SO happy for her when she met and married Unie. (Lionel) They traveled a bit & had happy years together. When he became ill, she was his caregiver until he passed. A few years later, my mother became ill and she became her caregiver as well. She adored my daughter, Heather, and became such close friends with Heather's mother, that she considered her as her niece. She also felt close to her neighbors, Maria & Danny O'Neil and Ann Cleary, and had a special soft spot in her heart for my cousin's Jeanne, Jocey & Sue who would visit her and bring thoughtful little gifts. She was a huge animal lover, and as I mentioned, she used to sing around the house. The songs "My Blue Heaven" and "Fernando's Hideaway" will forever bring her back to my heart.
