Obituary of Robert J. Hammill

Robert J. Hammill, age 76, of Trumbull, died on Saturday, February 16, 2008 at St. Vincent Medical Center with his family by his side. Born on January 4, 1932 in Bridgeport, he was a son of the late Charles and Elizabeth Fogarty Hammill, and was a resident of Trumbull over 35 years. He was formerly employed by the Trumbull Board of Education, Sikorsky Aircraft and Bridgeport Machines. He was a graduate of the former Sacred Heart School in Bridgeport where he served as an alter boy for several years and attended Fairfield Preparatory School. Mr. Hammill was U.S. Navy veteran and felt privileged to play baseball for the U.S. Navy Quonsett Hut Flyers. He served as a Eucharistic Minister at Christ the King Church and was active in the former Christ the King Teen Open Door Program. He was a lifelong NY Yankees fan, an avid fan of the UCONN mens and womens Basketball and loved to watch football especially Army Navy games and Notre Dame games. He played baseball for Sikorsky Aircraft and the Industrial and City Leagues. He loved sports, music and flowers and spent his retirement years with his toy poodle Chelsea by his side and teaching his grandson Kevin the importance of sports.

Survivors include his loving wife of 46 years, Joan Barry Hammill and his beloved daughter, Mary Rivera and her husband Kevin of Trumbull; a grandson Kevin Thomas Rivera, Jr; a brother, William Hammill of Stratford, two sisters, Esther Morzek and her husband Chet of Trumbull, Margaret Scollin of Bridgeport; four brothers-in-law and their wives, Edward and Beverly Barry of Orange, Robert and Mary Barry of Nashville, NC, William Barry of Huntington, Dennis and Debbie Barry of Stratford; four sister-in-laws and their husbands, Margaret Moran of Bridgeport, Kathleen and Vincent Carbone of West Haven, Carol and Bruce Fern of Bridgeport, Patricia and Felix DAusilio of Bridgeport and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by three brothers, Jack, Charles and Thomas Hammill and a sister, Ethel Kliotz. 

Friends are invited to meet directly in Christ the King Church, 4700 Madison Ave., Trumbull on Wednesday, February 20, 2008 at 10:00 a.m. for a Mass of Christian Burial. Interment will follow in the Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Trumbull. Friends may call on Tuesday from 4 to 8 p.m. at The Abriola Parkview Funeral Home, 419 White Plains Road, Trumbull.
