I am so sad to hear the news of Joe's passing, and I hope his family can take comfort in all the good memories of Joe's life.
I only knew Joe for a short time. I just moved to Stratford and I had put a modest boat at Brown's Marina. I knew nobody in the area; meeting Joe was so warm and welcoming
to this lonely, novice boater! There was no question he couldn't answer, no situation in which he didn't offer help or to even loan tools. The news of Joe's passing has lingered heavily in the last few days. I will remember with pleasure the times we sat in his office and struck up a conversation about anything and everything. We fed the wood stove, the stress of the day went away, and it made quite an impression on me that Joe seemed to open his heart and chat in such friendly terms. He led such an interesting, independent and varied life.
There is much sadness in the neighborhood right now, but there are so many nice memories to keep.

We want to express our deepest sympathies to the family of Joe Alves. He was our friend, our cousin, and through our mutual boatyards, our very good and trusted business associate. We admired him so much for his strong work ethic and his total dedication to both his family and his family-owned business. We will miss seeing him here and at his boat yard.
Sincerely,
The Browns: John, Karen, and Johnny

I didn't know Joe personally, but my Husband Ray and his best friend Bob were always down at the marina and came home with some wonderful stories that always kept us laughing. He will be missed by many. My sincere condolences for your loss.

Joe was always a great guy to me and my family- always willing to give a helping hand, extremely hard working and well respected man. My father and his best friend spent many hours down at the marina before they passed. The marina has a way of bringing some great people together! Hopefully they are all trading boating stories in the sky! He will be missed.

Donna,
I fully intended to pay my respects to my friend Joe today, however my own father is dying at this time and I spent the day with him. I have been hanging around Brown's Boatyard for a long time, I knew your grandfather, you father, and Joe. I always had a good time with Joe
and enjoyed many hours shooting the breeze with him and all the assorted characters who wandered in and out of the yard. I will miss him and I will miss his big smile.
