Obituary of Klawa Uhliar

Klawa Luczynskyj Uhliar, age 88, died quietly at home on Friday, October 3, 2014. Klawa was born on April 4, 1926 in Okhtyrka, Ukraine. At the age of 16, she was forcibly taken to Germany by the invading Nazis as a slave-laborer, where she endured WWII. After Allied liberation, she spent several years in Displaced Persons Camps where she married and had two daughters. She immigrated to the United States in June, 1951, settling in New Haven, CT. She readily learned English and just as soon as was allowed, she proudly became an American Citizen, and never once missed voting in elections. She was a parishioner of St. Michael's Ukranian Greek Catholic Church in New Haven. She was an accomplished seamstress and worked at Robby Len (Bathing suit) Co. for many years. She loved music and was a wonderful dancer, teaching many a friend how to waltz. She created homemade soups out of next to nothing and her Ukrainian kapusta was second to none. She was an extraordinary wild mushroom forager and had her secret places, but she willingly shared them with anyone who wanted to learn. She loved meeting people and was a member of several senior clubs over the years. Above all else, she loved being a mother. She cherished her daughters who in turn cherished her. She leaves her two daughters, Irene Piscitelli of Trumbull, Olga Wetmore of Waterbury and her "number-one son-in-law", Frank (Piscitelli). The family would like to thank Mrs. Ann Santana, RN and the Vitas Hospice/Stratford, for their care and support. Friends may greet the family on Friday, October 10, 2014 from 12:00 – 1:00 p.m. at the Abriola Parkview Funeral Home, 419 White Plains Road, Trumbull with a prayer service to follow at 1:00 p.m. in the funeral home. Interment will be private and at the convenience of the family. When you chance upon a cluster of mushrooms, smile and remember Klawa.
