Obituary of Nicola G. Bernardo

Nicola (Joe) G. Bernardo, age 90, of Bridgeport, beloved husband of Virginia Borelli Bernardo, died peacefully on Monday, May 26, 2014. Born in Bridgeport on December 6, 1923, he was a son of the late Michael and Michalina Bernardo. A U.S. Army Veteran, before his retirement Joe was a sexton for many years at the Golden Hill Methodist Church, Bridgeport. An avid bingo player and car enthusiast, Joe's greatest passion however was his beloved wife of 68 years and the time he spent with her. He was predeceased by a son, Michael Joseph Bernardo, daughter-in-law, Mary Schmitt Bernardo, a brother, Michael John Bernardo and a sister, Rose Swenton. Survivors include two loving daughters, Linda Esposito and her husband Carl of Potsdam, NY and Karen Michaels and her husband Michael Prete of Versailles, KY, six cherished grandchildren, Carl Esposito Jr., Cathy Kudzma and her husband Eric, Christine Esposito, Leonard Esposito and his wife Annie, Cody Michaels and Adley Michaels, four great grandchildren, Gary Esposito, Ryan McRobbie, Brayden Kudzma and Katelyn Kudzma. He also leaves to cherish his memory, a sister, Concetta (Connie) Ballerini of Fairfield, and two brothers, Jerry Bernardo of Fairfield and Frank Bernardo of Trumbull, and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will take place on Friday, May 30, 2014 at 12:00 p.m. in the Abriola Parkview Funeral Home, 419 White Plains Road, Trumbull. Relatives and friends may greet the family at the funeral home on Friday morning from 11:00 a.m. until the time of service. Interment with military honors will follow in St. John Cemetery, Stratford. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 38 Richards Ave., Norwalk, CT. 06854.
