Obituary of Manuel Portela

Manuel Labaredas Portela, age 78, of Bridgeport, beloved husband of Maria Moreno Portela, died peacefully on Thursday, April 24, 2014 at St. Vincent's Medical Center with his loving family by his side. Born on January 10, 1936 in Pedrario, Montalegre, Portugal he was a son of the late Manuel Goncalves Portela and Maria Flores Portela. Manuel was a member of the Laborers Union Local 146, and was employed by the former Peter Mitchell Construction Company and Mark IV Construction and was a member of the Vasco da Gama Club. He was a loving and dedicated husband, father and grandfather who enjoyed time spent with his family, especially his granddaughter Melissa. In addition to his beloved wife of 55 years, Maria, survivors include a loving son, John Portela and his wife Celeste of Bridgeport, a treasured granddaughter, Melissa Portela; two brothers, Mario Portela and Esmael Portela and his wife Jacinta, all of Bridgeport, a sister, Natevidade Martins and her husband Armando of Portugal, brother-in-law, John Moreno and his wife Maria of Fairfield, as well as several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brothers, Joao, Joaquim, Antonio and Artur Portela and his father and mother-in-law, Joaquim and Ermelinda Moreno. Funeral services will take place on Monday, April 28, 2013 at 9:00 a.m. in the Abriola Parkview Funeral Home, 419 White Plains Road, Trumbull, and at 10:00 a.m. in Our Lady of Fatima Church, Bridgeport for a Mass of Christian Burial. Entombment will follow in the Garden Mausoleum in St. Michael's Cemetery, Stratford. Relatives and friends may greet the family on Sunday from 2-6 pm.
