Obituary of Elizabeth Lee Atkins

Elizabeth Lee Atkins of Stratford, CT, died September 10, 2008 at Bridgeport Hospital. She was born March 23, 1933 to the Rev. Dr. W. Clyde and Sarah Lee Atkins in Baltimore Maryland. She graduated from Western High School, Baltimore, MD in 1950 and from Westhampton College, Richmond VA in 1953 with a degree in Psychology and Mathematics. She taught at Western High School from 1953-54 and then entered the Navy. She was on active duty until December 1956 and served eight years in the Naval Reserves, retiring as a Lieutenant. From 1956-1960, she worked at Notre Dame University in the Radiation Project. While there she also earned a masters degree in mathematics. She taught computer science and advanced mathematics at Rippowam High School (now Stamford High School) from 1961-1992. Following her retirement she tutored students in mathematics preparing them for their SAT exams. Betty was a lifetime-member of Woodbrook Baptist Church, Baltimore, MD, a congregation her father pastored for 40 years. In Connecticut, she was a member of the North Park Baptist Church and sang with the Sisters Cities Community Chorus of Stratford. Betty was a very active person, participating in horseback riding, ice skating and square dancing until her health prevented it. She was a devoted aunt and traveled extensively to visit her family. She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother Joseph T. Atkins, and a sister Ann A. Anderson. She is survived by her sister-in-law, Eugenia M. Atkins of Madison, AL and brother-in-law David J. Anderson, Woodland Hills, CA. She is survived by six nieces and nephews: Dianne Atkins (John Bertolatus) of Iowa City, IA, Linda Atkins (Jeff Carson) of Willoughby, Ohio, Rebecca (Michael) Hamilton of Madison, AL, David (Caryn) Atkins of Naperville, IL, Ann (Peter) Miller of Hickory, NC, and John (Vanessa) Tormey of Kirkland, WA. She is also survived by her great nieces and nephews, Matthew and David Bertolatus, Jessica Edkins, Erik and Gregory Hamilton, Nathan and Natalie Atkins, Taylor, Ryan and Meghan Miller, and Liam and Gwen Tormey. Funeral Information A memorial service will be held at North Park Baptist Church, 5200 Park Ave., Bridgeport on Saturday September 13, 2008 at 10:00 a.m. There will be a luncheon after the service for all friends and family. There will be a second memorial service at a later date at Woodbrook Baptist Church, where her ashes will be inurned.
