Obituary of Rev. Martin J. Dennehy

Reverend Martin J. Dennehy, a retired priest of the Diocese of Bridgeport, entered into eternal life on Monday, September 16, 2013 at the age of 88 years. Fr. Dennehy was born in New York, NY on February 28, 1925, a son of the late Martin A. and Marion (Holmes) Dennehy. He graduated from Cathedral Prep and College in Brooklyn, NY and continued his studies at the Seminary of the Immaculate Conception in Huntington, NY. In 1951, he graduated from Mt. St. Marys University and Seminary in Emmitsburg, MD and was ordained into the priesthood on June 9, 1951 in the Diocese of Brooklyn. On March 17, 1961, he was Incardinated in the Diocese of Bridgeport and was given many area assignments before being appointed to Our Lady of Good Counsel Church in Bridgeport where he served as Pastor from March of 1969 to January of 1980. He was then assigned to Saint James Church of Stratford in January of 1980 as Parochial Vicar/Part-time Graduate Studies and Saint Mary Church of Bethel as Parochial Vicar in June of 1980. In 1981, Fr. Martin was appointed Chaplin at Bridgeport Hospital while residing at Holy Rosary Parish until January of 1992 when he was made Parochial Vicar and Administrator at Holy Rosary Church, Bridgeport until his retirement on September 15, 1994. Survivors include a sister, Sister Eileen Dennehy, PBVM of New Windsor, NY, two brothers, Deacon John Dennehy and his wife Margaret of Brooklyn, NY, James Dennehy of Trumbull, a sister-in-law, Dorothy Dennehy of Queens, NY as well as a niece and several nephews. In addition to his parents, Fr. Martin was predeceased by a brother, Thomas Dennehy. Funeral Information The Reception of the Body will take place at St. Theresa Church, 5301 Main St., Trumbull at 9:00 a.m. on Friday, September 20, 2013 with visiting hours until 11:00 a.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Theresa Church at 11:00 a.m. by the Most Reverend Frank J. Caggiano, D.D., Bishop of the Diocese of Bridgeport. Interment will follow in The Priest Circle at St. Michaels Cemetery, Stratford. Arrangements are in care of the Abriola Parkview Funeral Home, 419 White Plains Road, Trumbull.
