Obituary of Joseph Calabro

President and CEO of Calabro Cheese Corp. Joseph Calabro, age 88, of Stratford, CT, beloved husband of Jean Brunetto Calabro, died peacefully on Wednesday, July 7, 2010 in The Connecticut Hospice, Branford, CT with family by his side. Born in Graniti, Province of Messina, Sicily on June 27, 1922, he was the son of the late Salvatore and Rosaria Calabro. He served in the Italian army in World War II as a lieutenant officer. Joseph was educated at the University of Messina where he pursued a doctorate in Physics and Mathematics. The lure of the opportunity of America prompted him to leave Sicily in 1948 with his mother and sister to begin a new life and join his father who had previously immigrated to the United States. He married Jean Brunetto the only daughter of Josephine and Joseph Brunetto whose parents emigrated from the same town of Graniti, Sicily in 1919. He was introduced by family to this graceful and beautiful woman and they were married on February 18, 1950. He began his Italian cheese business in Stratford, CT, expanding to an operating creamery in Wells River, VT while maintaining offices and distribution in New Haven, CT. In September 1980, he consolidated manufacturing and distribution into a new large scale integrated facility in East Haven, CT. Joseph navigated the company with entrepreneurial vision and strategic initiative creating a nationally recognized Italian cheese business. Joseph Calabro served as President and CEO of Calabro Cheese Corporation for 55 years. He is survived by his loving wife Jean of 60 years, his son, Salvatore J. Calabro of East Haven, CT, his daughter Rita A. Calabro M.D. and her husband Christopher Carroll, his four grandchildren, Connor, Christian, Cameron and Charlotte Calabro Carroll, all of Falls Church, Virginia, his devoted sister Millie Angeloni of North Branford, CT, his nephew and niece, Frank and Rose Angeloni and his great nephews and niece, Elliot, Sara and Michael, all of North Branford, CT. Funeral Information Funeral services will take place on Monday, July 12, 2010 at 9:00 a.m. in the Abriola Parkview Funeral Home, 419 White Plains Road, Trumbull, and at 10:00 a.m. in Holy Name of Jesus Church, Stratford for a Mass of Christian Burial. Interment will follow in St. Michael Cemetery, Stratford.
