Obituary of Robert Alden Sherwood

Resident of Bridgeport Sherwood-Robert Alden Sherwood, Sr. age 92 of Bridgeport, passed away peacefully on February 26, 2010 in Ridgefield. Bob was born in Bridgeport to the late Stanley and Nellie (Nichols) Sherwood. He graduated from Harding High School in 1934 and attended Bridgeport Engineering Institute. Bob worked at the Bridgeport Brass Company before becoming operator of Sherwoods Mobil gas station at the corner of Connecticut and Central Avenues for close to 40 years. He was an expert Mechanic who built and drove midget racecars and is remembered for customized VWs. Bob could fix just about anything, but if he couldnt hed adapt it for new use. Bob passed along his love of hunting and fishing to his son Bob, Jr. and grandson Scott and his love of NASCAR to his great grandson Jackson. His grandchildren and great grandchildren brought special joy to Bobs life. He spent many afternoons working on crossword puzzles with Mallory, weekends attending Robbys wrestling and gymnastic events and evenings eating great food Kim prepared for him. Jill and Hailey would dine with Gramps at Frankies Diner on Saturday nights. Never at a loss for words, Bob would regale and amaze all of them with tales of his youth. After retiring from the gas station, Bob worked at Moore Tool. He was the beloved husband of Antoinette (Nettie) Scinto for 64 years before her death in 2002. His devoted care of her during her long illness was unfailing. Bob was a member of The Mohegan Rod and Gun Club, The Remington Arms Gun Club, ACOT, and was a life member of the East End Yacht Club. In addition to his wife Nettie, Bob was predeceased by his daughter, Beverly Petro, and his sister, Eleanor Connelly. Bob leaves to cherish his memory a son Robert Sherwood, Jr. and his wife Sarri of Ridgefield and a daughter Sandra Peslak and her husband, Theodore of Bridgeport. Bob treasured his grandchildren, Kim Petro Rioux and her husband Roy of Seymour, Scott Peslak and his wife Lisa of Oxford, Jill Peslak Russo and her husband Michael of Milford, Bayne Robby and Kelly Sherwood of Ridgefield and Deborah Petro of Milford. Bobs later years were brightened by his great grandchildren, Mallory and Jackson Rioux, Hailey and Courtney Russo, and Taylor and Matthew DiNicola. Bob is also survived by a special cousin, Jack Sherry of Vermont, a sister-in-law Maria Riccio of Trumbull, brothers in law Salvatore Orticelli of Monroe and Patrick Scinto of New Jersey and many nieces and nephews. Funeral Information In accordance with Bobs wishes there will be no calling hours and interment will be private.
