Obituary of Pasquale Emil Perillie

Dr. Pasquale Pat Perillie died on May 15, 2013 at Bridgeport Hospital. He was predeceased by his parents Carmen and Lucy (Tedesco) Perillie and his beloved brother Carmen, who died in childhood. Pat was born on September 2, 1926 in his parents cold water flat in Bridgeport, CT and graduated from Warren Harding High School in 1944. While at Harding he played on both the baseball and basketball teams, captained the 1944 basketball team and was named to the all-state team that year. Pat received an athletic scholarship to the University of Connecticut in 1944 and played on the UCONN varsity basketball team as a freshman. He played his last game with UCONN in December 1944 playing against NYU at Madison Square Garden. In January 1945 he was drafted and inducted into the U.S. Army. He served in an occupation unit in Japan and was honorably discharged from the Army in November 1946. Pat resumed college at UCONN in 1947, graduated with honors in 1951 and then matriculated at New York Medical College. He graduated with honors from New York Medical College in 1955, interned at St. Vincents Hospital in Bridgeport and completed his medical residency at the West Haven VA hospital in 1959. He then completed a two year fellowship in hematology at the Yale School of Medicine. Following completion of his fellowship, he joined the full time medical faculty at Yale in 1961. He remained on the faculty and was promoted to an Attending Professor of Medicine in 1968. That same year he was named the Chairman of the Department of Medicine at Bridgeport Hospital, making him the first full time physician appointed there. During his time at Bridgeport Hospital he was named a full Clinical Professor of Medicine at the Yale School of School of Medicine and also the Director of Medical Residency Program at Bridgeport Hospital. He served as Department Chairman for twenty eight years, until 1996. Dr. Perillie was a dedicated and passionate teacher of medical residents and students, which he continued doing until 2009. In all, he worked a total of forty two years at Bridgeport Hospital and influenced many generations of physicians. Pat was a loving husband, father and grandfather. His passion was medicine but his greatest joy was being surrounded by his family and watching his children and grandchildren grow. This was evident in the genuine pride he showed for each member of his family for their individual talents and accomplishments, both big and small. He leaves behind his caring and devoted wife of sixty years Peggy Mack Perillie and their four daughters and one son: Pamela and her husband Paul McLaughlin of Stratford; Patrice and her husband William Missett of Puerto Escondido, Mexico; Penny and her husband Mark Schroeder of Trumbull; Polly and her husband David DAddario of Easton and Paul and his wife Debra Perillie of Huntington, Long Island. He leaves behind his sister Catherine Kay Haverkoch and nephew Pasquale Pat Haverkoch and wife Joyce of Mount Laurel, NJ. He is also survived by seven grandchildren: Ryan McLaughlin; Jodi McLaughlin and her husband Claude Petruccelli; Sarah Schroeder and her husband Drew Rodgers; Kimberly Schroeder; Siena DAddario, Olivia DAddario and Samantha Perillie. His many friends and colleagues will miss his memorable demeanor, personality, wit, and ability to think of a song for any occasion. Funeral Information Friends are invited to meet directly in St. Ambrose Church, 1596 Boston Ave., Bridgeport on Saturday, May 18, 2013 at 9:30 a.m. for a Mass of Christian Burial. Interment will follow in Nichols Village Cemetery, Trumbull. Family and friends may call on Friday from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at The Abriola Parkview Funeral Home, 419 White Plains Road, Trumbull.
