Obituary of John G. Onorato

John G. Onorato, of Middlebrook Farms, Trumbull, died peacefully at home on Sunday, October 24, 2010 at the age of 94. Born in Little Falls, NY on August 1, 1916, he was the son of Aquilino and Domenico Onorato. In 1918, the family moved to Bridgeport, CT, where he graduated in 1934 from Harding High School and State Trade School and where he was a cross-country runner and often ran the mile. After graduating from high school, he continued adult education in math studies. He joined the Army in 1939, where he served 6 years attaining the rank of Technical Sergeant and was also a medic in Field Artillery. He was honorably discharged July 14, 1945. Three years later he joined the Postal Service from which he retired after 30 years and during which time he was active as local secretary treasurer for the American Postal Workers Union. He then became Secretary Treasurer for the APWU State organization for a further eight years. He was a member of the American Legion and the Disabled Veterans Association and had been a member of St. Theresas Senior Center in Trumbull and the Baldwin Senior Center in Stratford. For a period of 27 years, he spent several months a year in Paris, France visiting his daughter and son-in-law where they reside. He was pre-deceased by his wife Mary Verrilli Onorato, his beloved spouse of 41 years. He is survived by his daughter Kathleen L. Onorato Silverman and husband Peter Silverman, a brother Armand Onorato of Durham, and numerous nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews. He was pre-deceased by his brothers and sisters, Frank Onorato, Pauline Lallay, Alfred Onorato, Philomena Bryan, Jean Dwyer and Emil Onorato and his devoted companion of 10 years, Hilda Soderberg. Funeral Information Funeral services will take place on Friday, October 29, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. in the Abriola Parkview Funeral Home, 419 White Plains Road, Trumbull, and at 11:00 a.m. in Holy Rosary Church, Bridgeport for a Mass of Christian Burial. Interment with military honors will follow in St. Michael Cemetery, Stratford. Friends may call on Thursday from 4-8 p.m.
