Obituary of Daniel J. Mooney

Resident of Bridgeport MOONEY Daniel J. Mooney Sr., age 87, of Bridgeport, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, March 23, 2011 at Griffin Hospital. He was the widower of Julia Petrosino Mooney. Daniel was born in Scotland on August 17, 1923, the son of the late John and Margaret Quinn Mooney. He served as a decorated Staff Sergeant, Company C, 349th Infantry in the U. S. Army during World War II receiving the Purple Heart and the Silver Star for gallantry in action on October 2, 1944 at Campo Di Vanino, Italy. He was a retired brake lining foreman for Raybestos in Stratford for 42 years. His most cherished hobby was attending his grandsons' sporting events, starting with little league, Pop Warner Football to attending their high school and college football games. There never was a school event or game that he missed no matter how far the venue took him. He was the beloved father of one daughter, Donna Karagus of Trumbull and one son, Daniel Mooney Jr. and his wife Debra of Huntersville, North Carolina, four grandsons, Mark Karagus and his fiance Ilissa Nordyk of Derby, Craig Karagus and his wife Esmeralda of Logrono, Spain, Bryon Karagus and his fiance, Victoria Bush of New York City, Daniel John Mooney III of Huntersville, North Carolina and one great grandson, Matthew Karagus of Logrono, Spain. He is also survived by one sister Elizabeth Guerra and her husband Charles of Fairfield; sisters-in-law, Elizabeth Mooney of Stratford, Nancy Mooney of Bridgeport, Elizabeth Battaglia and her husband Sam of Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina and Mary Sando and her husband George of Sumersville, South Carolina, a brother-in-law, Ralph Petrosino and his wife Florence of Trumbull and several nieces and nephews. Daniel was pre-deceased by a sister, Mary Colella and two brothers, James and John Mooney. Dan was active as a member of the Bridgeport Old Timers; a French horn player for the Connecticut Yankee Drum and Bugle Corps; and was a member of the Disabled American Veterans Association. He was also a team manager for the North End Little League in Bridgeport and he was the score-keeper for the Raybestos Brakettes. An avid dancer, he and his wife Julia participated in many local dances held throughout the greater Bridgeport area. Dan was also an avid fan of the Boston Red Sox and UCONN basketball teams. The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the nurses and staff of Griffin Hospital 2 North for their care and professionalism. Funeral Information Friends are invited to meet directly in St. Andrew Church, 435 Anton St., Bridgeport on Monday, March 28, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. for a Mass of Christian Burial. Interment with military honors will follow in Mountain Grove Cemetery of Easton. Family and friends may call on Sunday from 3-7 p.m. at The Abriola Parkview Funeral Home, 419 White Plains Road, Trumbull.
