Obituary of Joseph Michael Monaco

Devoted Husband, Father & Grandfather Joseph Michael Monaco, age 78, of Westport, formerly of Trumbull, husband of his loving and supportive wife of 41 years, Joan Leja Savo Monaco, died on Sunday September 6, 2009 in St. Vincent Medical Center after a courageous battle with cancer. Born in Pettorano sul Gigio, Italy on September 29, 1930, he was a son of the late Domenico and Liberata Oddi Monaco. Mr. Monaco graduated from Fairfield University with a Bachelors degree in Economics in 1952, earned his Masters degree in Education from the University of Bridgeport in 1963, and was a teacher with the Bridgeport Board of Education until 1984. He was the past President of County Schools from 1959-1991, the Mandl School of New York City from 1985-1990, and New York Food and Management School from 1981-2002. He was on the Board of Directors for Educational Training from 1991-2004, and Training Direct from 2004-present. Additionally, Mr. Monaco was also elected to the Board of Directors of the National Home Study Council in Washington D.C. from 1986-1988. He was a member of the Presidents Circle of Fairfield University for over 10 years, and was a long time member of the Mill River Country Club. His greatest pleasures included his family, his employees as well as his annual trips to Italy. Survivors, in addition to his wife, include his devoted children, Joann Quaranta, and her husband Gary of Monroe, Mark Monaco of Hallandale, FL, and Joseph S. Monaco and his wife Denise of Fairfield, five grandchildren, Lisa Stanley, Gary Quaranta Jr., Mark and Ryan Monaco and Alexandra Monaco. He is also survived by a brother, Domenic C. Monaco and his wife Suzanne of Trumbull. In addition, he will be sadly missed by all those who admired and respected him, especially his life-long friends and his past and present loyal employees. Mr. Monaco was pre-deceased by his first wife, Dorothy Kulhawik Monaco. The family would like to extend special thanks to Medical Specialists of Fairfield and the staff of St. Vincents Medical Center for their care and compassion during his illness. Funeral Information Funeral services will take place on Wednesday September 9, 2009 at 9:00 a.m. in the Abriola Parkview Funeral Home, 419 White Plains Road, Trumbull, and at 10:00 a.m. in St. Pius X Church, 835 Brookside Dr., Fairfield for a Mass of Christian Burial, with the Reverend Monsignor Lawrence Carroll officiating. Interment will follow in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Trumbull. Friends may call on Tuesday from 4-8 p.m.
