Obituary of Michael J. Covino

Michael Joseph Covino, age 89, beloved husband of Christina Ulmaniec Covino of Trumbull, passed away on Wednesday, December 28, 2016 at home surrounded by his loving family. Born in Bridgeport on November 11, 1927, he was a son of the late Joseph and Elvira Stellabotte Covino and was a longtime resident of Trumbull. Michael graduated from Central High School in 1945, the University of Bridgeport in 1949 with a Bachelor's Degree in Biology, the Illinois College of Optometry in 1957 with his Doctorate and the University of Bridgeport in 1962 with his Master's Degree in Education. Mr. Covino was proud to have served his country during the Korean War in the U.S. Army, where he was awarded the Korean Service Medal and the United Nations Service Medal. He had worked as an Optometrist in Bridgeport for 35 years, as a chemistry teacher at Harding High School for 35 years, and Adjunct Faculty in the Mathematics Department of both Housatonic Community College and University of Bridgeport for 10 years. His great love was teaching, however his hobbies included gardening, playing cribbage, poker, crossword and sudoku puzzles, and reading. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and uncle who will be greatly missed by all who knew him. In addition to his loving wife of 57 years, Christina, other family include his devoted children, Joseph and Elizabeth Covino of Cumberland, RI, Michele and Leonard Deaso of Fairfield, Tina and Scott Bokine of Monroe, Jacqueline and John Gelmetti of Trumbull, cherished grandchildren, Sara and Kevin Tucker of Providence, RI, Francisco and Linsey Covino-Deaso of Boston, MA, Meagan Covino and fiancé Patrick Lindsey of Nashville, TN, Katie Covino of Cumberland, RI, Jack Covino of Cumberland, RI, Jillian Gelmetti of Trumbull, Melissa Bokine of Monroe, Patrick Bokine of Monroe, Lucas Gelmetti of Trumbull and a great-granddaughter, Addison Covino of Cumberland, RI, and his sister, Janice Covino of Fairfield. He was predeceased by his brother, Alfred Covino, DMD. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, January 4, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. in the Abriola Parkview Funeral Home, 419 White Plains Rd., Trumbull and at 11:00 a.m. in St. Theresa Church, Trumbull for a Mass of Christian Burial. Interment with military honors will follow in St. John Cemetery, Monroe. Friends may greet the family on Tuesday, January 3, 2017 from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
