Obituary of Gilberto Martins

Gilberto Martins, age 87, of Bridgeport, passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 27, 2026 at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was the beloved husband of Margarida Maria Ferreira Martins. Born in Sao Miguel, Azores, Portugal, he was the son of the late Joao and Norbina (de Aguiar) Martins and was a longtime resident of Bridgeport.

Gilberto emigrated to the United States with his family in 1975 and settled in Bridgeport. He worked construction for many years before becoming a maintenance engineer at Superior Plating until his retirement. He worked hard to provide a better life for his wife and children. A devout man he was a parishioner of Our Lady of Fatima Church in Bridgeport and loved attending Mass. Gilberto enjoyed being outdoors and could often be found tending to his yard and the vegetable garden. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and proud great grandfather and will be missed by all who knew and loved him.

In addition to his beloved wife Margarida of 63 years, survivors include his five loving children, John Martins and his wife Silvia, Luis Martins, Lucia Martins and Zelia Martins, a sister, Lidia Tavares and her husband Altino, five loving grandchildren, Toria Larame and her husband Samuel, Cassandra Martins, Piper Freed, Vail Freed, and Beatrice Martins, three cherished great grandchildren, Elias, Francesca and Samuel Joseph “S.J.”, as well as many nieces & nephews. Lastly, he had very special friends that he considered family. He was predeceased by a sister, Julietta Cabral and her husband Jacinto Cabral.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, July 1, 2026 at 10:30 a.m. directly in Our Lady of Fatima Church, 429 Huntington Rd., Bridgeport. Interment will follow in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Trumbull. Relatives and friends may greet the family on Tuesday, June 30th from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. in the Abriola Parkview Funeral Home, 419 White Plains Rd., Trumbull.
