Obituary of John Daniel Merena

John Daniel Merena, age 82, of Bridgeport, beloved husband of the late Barbara (nee Bubernak) Merena, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 12, 2026. Born in Bridgeport on December 31,1943, he was a son of the late John and Ann (nee Klein) Merena. A lifelong Bridgeport resident, Dan proudly served in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War. He then returned to follow in his father's footsteps to serve his community as a Bridgeport Police Officer for almost 48 years. Dan had many roles in the BPT PD, from patrolman, to working in the garage, to narcotics, to being promoted to Lieutenant in the traffic division. Dan was a huge part of the Police Athletic League for a great many years. During this time, Dan also earned his Masters Degree in Criminology from Sacred Heart University. He enjoyed watching NASCAR, football, and baseball. In his younger years he loved playing golf. Most of all Dan loved cars, motorcycles, food, drinks, and spending time at his homes in Maine and Mexico. Dan was not a man of many words but he sure had a never-ending amount of stories. His family and friends will miss him dearly. Survivors include his two loving children, a son, John Daniel Kurtis Merena and his wife Dori and a daughter, Claudette Merena-LePage and her husband Darren, four cherished grandchildren, Colby and Emily Merena and Katrina and Jasmin LePage, a sister, Marianne Merena, as well as several nieces, nephews and many many friends. He was predeceased by his brother, Brian Merena. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, May 21, 2026 at 10 a.m. in St. Theresa Church, 5301 Main St., Trumbull. Interment with military honors will follow in St. Michael's Cemetery, Stratford.
