Obituary of Maria Barreira Pita

Maria Barreira Pita, age 84, of Shelton, beloved wife of Jose M. Pita, passed away peacefully on Monday, April 20, 2026 with her loving family by her side. Born on August 18, 1941 in Nogueira, Chaves, Portugal, she was a daughter of the late Jose and Herminia Taveira Barreira. Along with her family, she immigrated to the United States in 1970, settling in Bridgeport for 31 years before moving to Shelton. She was a retired employee of Bridgeport Manor, having over 20 years of dedicated service before her retirement. Maria was a loving and devoted wife and mother. She was dedicated to care of her family, always putting their needs before her own. She enjoyed cooking for family and friends and enjoyed having everyone together. She was a longtime and dedicated parishioner of Our Lady of Fatima Church. The unconditional love she gave will forever live in the hearts of all who knew and loved her. In addition to her beloved husband Jose of 64 years, survivors include her four loving sons, Carlos Pita, Jose Paul Pita, Jorge Manuel Pita and Michael Barreira Pita, a brother, Jose Barreira Jr., seven sisters, Dora Barreira, Fernanda Gomes, Zulmira Santos, Silvia Barreira Costa and her husband Americo, Odette Barreira Schooley and her husband Tomasz, Maria Augusta DeJesus and Natalia Pereira and her husband Gustavo, as well as several nieces, nephews and Godchildren. She was predeceased by two brothers, Belmiro and Norberto Barreira and a nephew, Joe Barreira. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, April 27, 2026 at 11:00 a.m. in Our Lady of Fatima Church, 429 Huntington Rd., Bridgeport. Interment will follow in Lawncroft Cemetery, Fairfield. Relatives and friends may greet the family on Monday morning from 9:00 a.m. – 10:30 a.m. in the funeral home.
