Obituary of Maria D. Fernandes

Maria De Gouveia Fernandes, age 95 of Shelton, the beloved wife for 56 years of the late Francisco Fernandes passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 4, 2026 at Shelton Lakes, Shelton. Born in Madeira, Portugal on June 8, 1930, she was a daughter of the late Joao and Natividade (Rodrigues) de Gouveia and lived in Bridgeport & Shelton most of her life. She immigrated to the U.S. with her family in 1975. Maria enjoyed gardening and cooking but her greatest enjoyment was found in the time she spent surrounded by her children and grandchildren, whom she adored. Survivors include her beloved children, Maria Pires and husband Joao of Oxford, Linda Kirim and husband Joe of California, Manuel Fernandes and wife Maria of Shelton, Fatima Fernandes of Bridgeport, and John Fernandes of Bridgeport, Jose Fernandes of Portugal, her grandchildren, Domingos, Melissa, Jennifer, Mark, Sonia, Frank, Nick, Alexis, Stephanie, John Jr, Dercio and Kiko, her great grandchildren, Jazelle, Jaela-Shea, Jace, Jack, Eva, Ayden and Ayla, and her sisters, Natividade, Rosa and Ilda. She was predeceased by her children, Natividade, Norberto, Eugenio, Edwardo and Lidia and her grandson, Michael. She is also predeceased by her siblings Manuel, Eduardo and Eugenio. The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at Shelton Lakes in Shelton for their wonderful care and support of Maria. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, April 8, 2026 at 9:30 AM in Our Lady of Fatima Church, 429 Huntington Rd., Bridgeport. Interment will follow in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Trumbull. Friends may greet the family on Tuesday from 4:00 to 7:00 PM in the Abriola Parkview Funeral Home, 419 White Plains Rd., Trumbull.
