Obituary of Cynthia M. Smith
Cynthia M. Smith, age 105, of Monroe passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 21, 2026 at her home. Born in Danbury on December 23, 1920, she was the daughter of the late George and Julie (Blake) Smith. She attended Bethel High School and graduated from Colby College in Maine. Cynthia worked for Chance Vought Aircraft in Stratford and was later transferred to Texas where she was the administrative assistant to the Superintendent of the Experimental Department. In 1953, she returned to Connecticut and was the Credit Manager for Warnaco until her retirement.
Music was her love. She was proficient at the piano and the organ, often substituting at churches in the community. She pursued many hobbies including carpentry (building her dining room furniture), sewing and knitting, leather crafting, electronics (assembling a piano and organ), and cooking (compiling her recipes into two cookbooks). She enjoyed gardening, and her freezer, filled with frozen vegetables, was a testament to the fruits of her labor. She continued to grow tomatoes into her 90s. Cynthia was very active at the Golden Hill United Methodist Church for many years directing the handbell choir, managing the web, and publishing the monthly church newsletter. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
She is survived by her loving nieces, Judy Grimes and her husband John of Southbury, Betsy Goodfellow and her husband Doug of Signal Mountain, TN, and her devoted nephew-in-law, Steve Whitaker of New London, NH., as well as ten grand nieces and nephews, and twenty great grand nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brother, Wardley Smith and his wife, Nelle, her niece, Cynthia Whitaker, and her great grand-nephew, Declan Cooney.
A service of celebration will be held at Golden Hill United Methodist Church, 210 Elm St., Bridgeport, CT on Saturday, March 28th at 10:30 am. The interment will be held privately at the convenience of the family.
Contributions may be made to the Nelle Elizabeth Smith Scholarship Fund at Golden Hill United Methodist Church. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Abriola Parkview Funeral Home, Trumbull.
