Obituary of Virginia Gomes

Virginia Gomes, age 97, of Bridgeport passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 1, 2026 at Civita Care at Northbridge in Bridgeport surrounded by her loving family. She was the beloved wife of the late Alexandre Freitas. Born in Chaves, Portugal on October 4, 1928 she was a daughter of the late Candido Gomes and Maria da Conceicao. Virginia loved to cook and her life revolved around feeding others. She was happiest when surrounded by her family and catering to their needs before her own. A loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, aunt and friend to many. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her. Survivors include her devoted children, Maria Alves (the late Jose Alves) of Bridgeport, Virginia Freitas and her husband Jose Sousa and Fatima Freitas, both of Portugal, and Antonio Freitas and his wife Zita of Ossining, NY, her devoted grandchildren, Marelene, Paula, Alexandre, Carlos, Angelica, Elizabeth, Jessica, Paulo, Ricardo, Joe, Steve, Michaela, and Giselle, her brother, Alexandre Gomes of Mount Vernon , NY, her sisters, Odete Gomes of Portugal and Ana Gomes of France, her daughter-in-law, Jacinta Freitas as well as 16 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her beloved husband, Alexandre, she was also predeceased by a daughter, Fernanda Freitas, a son, Jose Freitas, and two brothers and two sisters. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, March 6, 2026 at 10:30 a.m. in Our Lady of Fatima Church, 429 Huntington Rd., Bridgeport. Interment will follow in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Trumbull. Friends may greet the family on Thursday, March 5, 2026 from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. in the Abriola Parkview Funeral Home, 419 White Plains Rd., Trumbull.
