Obituary of Dr. Germano A. Guadagnoli, MD

Dr. Germano A. Guadagnoli, MD, age 71, of Middletown, beloved husband of Laura Paqua Guadagnoli, passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 21, 2025 at Bridgeport Hospital surrounded by his loving family. Born in Brooklyn, NY on August 8, 1954, he was a son of Doria (DiGiacomo) Guadagnoli and the late Luciano Guadagnoli and was a longtime resident of Trumbull.

Germano’s life was a story of determination, love, and deep compassion. He was born just two weeks after Doria left their beloved village of Cansano to immigrate to America and reunite with her husband. As the eldest son in an Italian-American immigrant family, there was an unspoken expectation to succeed—and Germano rose to that challenge. After his father passed, Germano became the patriarch of the Guadagnoli family - the wise big brother that his siblings admired.

He was the first in his family to graduate from college and soon after returned to Italy to attend medical school at the University of Perugia. It was there that he met his wife, Laura, who was studying abroad. The two fell in love and maintained a long-distance relationship after Laura returned to the United States to complete her final year of school. When Germano later transferred to the University of Rome, they decided to marry and commit themselves fully to a shared future. They lived together in Italy for more than four years, a formative period that profoundly shaped their lives and defined their marriage as a true partnership.

Germano and Laura returned to the United States, where he completed his internship and residency at Bridgeport Hospital, followed by a fellowship in rheumatology at Stony Brook University. During this time, they welcomed their first two children, Lucian and Livia. After completing his fellowship, Germano returned to Connecticut to establish his medical practice, and soon after, their third child, Aurora, was born. Germano spent the next 30+ years caring deeply for his patients, teaching the next generation of physicians, and earning the respect and admiration of colleagues. He was named one of Connecticut’s top doctors for 30 consecutive years, served as an Instructor of Medicine at Yale University, and served as Chief of Rheumatology at Bridgeport Hospital for more than two decades. He was also honored as a Fellow of the American College of Rheumatology, a distinction that reflected his deep commitment to excellence. While Germano took pride in these accomplishments, the work closest to his heart was founding and working in the Bridgeport Hospital Rheumatology Clinic, where he devoted himself to caring for the underserved community.

Though Germano loved medicine, his family was always his highest priority. He never missed an opportunity to speak proudly about his children. To them, he was an endless source of wisdom, comfort, and adorably cringe-worthy dad jokes. He welcomed others into the family as well—especially his daughter-in-law, Ola, whom he loved as a daughter and who helped spark his love for Poland. He was also a “second dad” to many of his children’s friends, who adored him. While Germano had much to be proud of, perhaps his greatest joy was becoming “Nonno” to his beloved grandchildren, James and Adrian.

Germano worked hard, but he also knew how to savor life. He delighted in a wonderful meal at a favorite restaurant, a glass of good wine—especially a Barolo—traveling the world, and enjoying classical music. He loved gardening, birdwatching, and playing Age of Empires. His friendships meant the world to him, whether sharing “buck-a-shuck” oysters with Mitch, soaking up the Florida sun with Kenny, or attending a Zucchero concert with Bob. He especially cherished returning to Cansano, where he loved sitting in the piazza, drinking beer, and reconnecting with friends from his youth.

Germano retired from his medical practice on October 31, 2024. Though his retirement lasted only one year, he spent it exactly as he wished—traveling with Laura to Cozumel, Aruba, Alaska, Romania, Hungary, Austria, Serbia, Croatia, and Bulgaria, embracing each experience with the same adventure and passion that defined his life.

Germano’s final moments reflected the fullness and meaning of the life he built. Surrounded by family and friends, tears, laughter, and stories where shared. He enjoyed a taste of his favorite 2014 Barolo and shortly thereafter passed peacefully.

The family would like to thank Bridgeport Hospital, where he did his internship, residency and was chief of Rheumatology for so many years. The SICU, MICU and 9th floor nurses, doctors and support staff were phenomenal. The level of care, concern and comfort they gave to him was more than we could have hoped for. Jim began his career at Bridgeport Hospital and Bridgeport Hospital opened its arms to welcome him back as a patient and took care of him. His memory will live on in all whom he touched.

In addition to his mother and his devoted wife Laura of 43 years, survivors include three loving children, Lucian Guadagnoli and his wife Aleksandra, Livia Guadagnoli and Aurora Guadagnoli, two brothers, John Guadagnoli (Joanne) and Daniel Guadagnoli (Kristi) a sister, Maria Passalaqua (Frank) and two cherished grandsons, James and Adrian. He also leaves to cherish his memory brothers and sisters-in-law, David Paqua (Maria) and Lizabeth Lyons (Edward) as well as several cousins, nieces, nephews and many close friends.

All are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial that will be celebrated on Monday, December 29, 2025 at 1:00 p.m. directly at St. Stephen Church, 6948 Main St., Trumbull. Interment will be private. Friends may greet the family on Sunday, December 28 from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. in the Abriola Parkview Funeral Home, 419 White Plains Rd., Trumbull.
