I am so very sad to hear of Dr. Guadagnoli‘s passing. He was my physician for many many years and, although he was so looking forward to his retirement, I was so sorry that I was losing him and his medical and emotional support. He was an amazing physician, caring, patient, compassionate, and always with a listening ear and a story about his family and his travels to Italy and abroad. Those were his passions in life outside of medicine. My husband and I both were patients, and when John passed away the evening before our morning appointment, Dr. Guadagnoli called me personally with his heartfelt condolences and his emotional support. I will never forget that. My deepest and heartfelt condolences and prayers to his family and friends of this wonderful man. He has earned his angel’s wings and now will watch over us forever.

I had the pleasure of working with Dr G for many years . He was a kind , compasionate, caring doctor. He took time with his patients and he listened to them . He shared stories and talked so proudly about his children . He spoken of Lucien when he married and, and he talked about Aurora how proud of her and Olivia . We shared many memories and laughs but most importantly he loved being a Dr and he loved his patients and they loved him. Dr G was known for his bed side manner. Always so concerned and caring. He talked how he wanted to travel and see the world and I am glad to hear that he did have the opportunity to travel after his retirement. He will be missed by many. But most of all he will be missed by me as he and I shared so good times talking about our children how my son Ean knew Olivia and we would chit chat back and forth . Rest in Peace Dr G

My family is profoundly saddened by the sudden loss of our dear, dear cousin Jimmy. Though we lived countries apart, we have always maintained and cherished the strong bond amongst the Guadagnoli clan – our American cousins. Losing Jimmy is like a big chunk has been ripped out of our hearts. It’s hard to accept his physical presence is no longer here.
The memories go back a long way – from the times in the early 60's that Luciano and Doria brought the boys (Maria Agostina hadn’t arrived yet) up to visit us in Canada. Doria and my mum Anna Grazia Guadagnoli were like sisters and managed to squeeze all 10 of us in our tiny house. The house filled with laughter, noise, good food, playful arguments - I remember 9 year old Jimmy vociferously expounding on which “pawk” was the best in the world. It had to be Central “Pawk” though Prospect in Brooklyn came in near the top. The sweet tones of the Brooklyn accent were endearing.
As the years passed, our visits were less frequent but the warmth and attachment stayed strong. Whether it was meeting up in Cansano, at my brother Oliver’s house in Tuscany, or Oliver and I visiting Doria and the family for one of their memorable Thanksgiving feasts in New Jersey, we were always met with open arms as if no time had passed.
Jim was the epitome of kindness. I believe this trait permeated all his interactions in his personal life and as a doctor. An example of his dedication to his work and love of family which I will always deeply cherish: when Oliver’s wife Lorraine was diagnosed with a serious immune disorder, Jim didn’t hesitate to offer his home and clinic to provide a treatment for her which was not available in Canada. Later when Lorraine had reached the terminal stage and was on life support, Jim dropped everything and drove non-stop from Connecticut to Toronto with Laura and two of the kids – arriving directly at the hospital at 1 am. It was through Jim’s kind and loving intervention that Oliver was able to accept removing the life supports so Lorraine could have a more peaceful passing. This was Jim’s special gift.
And he was such a great lover of good food and good wine. Happy to indulge my brother Oliver’s expensive tastes when dining out. Conversations with Jimmy were always fascinating as he would bring up some interesting new facts about topics he had just been reading about. He had surprisingly eclectic interests and was happy to share them.
A loss of life so sudden and unexpected is painful and hard to accept. Those who have faith and believe that there is more to life after we pass can find solace in the thought that our loved ones are smiling down at us and will always be present in spirit. Jimmy, we will miss your physical presence, but you will always remain part of us.
My deepest condolences to Laura and the whole Guadagnoli family.

I met Sam in Perugia through a dear and close mutual friend, Ken. Sam and I hit it off immediately, we had mutual interests: history, reading and current events. Sam,Ken and the Lep all transferred to Rome from Perugia they got an apartment and when I transferred Sam picked me up from the airport and gave me a place to stay.
Through Med School we studied, played cards, went out to eat for intense feedings at Mamutones, a nearby restaurant with huge portions at very reasonable prices or “Penne alla Vodka” at La Palma. While in Perugia Sam and Laura met it grew into an intense and romantic love story that has endured 43 years. Sam was graduated from the University of of Rome and proceeded to a successful medical career, Chief of Service, an instructor at Yale. All prestigious positions. Our mutual friend also a rheumatologist and a very successful one, I became a nephrologist director and chief of service. All in all “Via Monte Fumiolo ( our residence in Rome ) did OK. Over time paths diverged but crossroads sometimes converge and they did about a month ago. When Ken told me of Sam’s diagnosis, Sam ,Ken and I all knew the prognosis an infaust prognosis. It only took a month. What can a man say about another man, he could try or listen to what good people are saying, much is being said and that is the testament to the man. Sam faced his fate and accepted his destiny. He worked through his fate and in doing so he revealed his destiny, his life his choice. His courage, his last ditch attitude he did try to uniting the bell instead he rang it louder. Sam gave us a masterclass in professionalism, elegance, elan, class and a quite eloquence that spoke of spirituality and Catholic faith. You did not go quietly you fought a losing battle a battle that you knew you could not win but for family, friends, yourself and for God you fought… you fought a good fight. Laura, family and friends take all your memories of Sam,dad, grandpa wrap them all in nice paper tie them with a ribbon and tie a bow. Place those memories on a shelf in the closet and on a melancholy Autumn Saturday afternoon take those memories down and relive them again. God Bless you Sam ,Rest in Peace Dottore you’ve earned it.

I was so sorry to hear about Dr.Guadagnoli’s passing! He took care of me about 6 years ago. He was spot on with my diagnosis and treatment. He said it would take about two years and that’s exactly what it took to control my condition! It never came back!
I knew several people with the same condition who went to different doctors and they are still struggling with the symptoms which are very painful. Thank you Dr. Guadagnoli and God bless you!

It is with profound sadness that I write these words in memory of my colleague, partner, and dear friend, Dr. Germano Guadagnoli ("Jim").
For many years, Jim and I worked closely together as partners, sharing daily clinical responsibilities, consults, and clinics. Through this work, I came to know him not only as an exceptional physician, but also as a person of extraordinary kindness, integrity, and generosity. He was the kindest doctor I have ever met, and he consistently received the highest scores from patients, not only for the quality of his medical care, but also for his professionalism, compassion, and humanity.
Jim brought joy to the workplace. During lunchtime, the doctors in the office would gather simply to hear his jokes and to learn about Italy. He was truly an encyclopedia, and we were all blessed to share stories, laughter, and wisdom with him. His presence made even the busiest days lighter.
Over time, our families became close. We celebrated together at children’s graduations, birthdays, and weddings, and built relationships that went far beyond the walls of the office. I had the privilege of knowing his beautiful and kind wife, Laura, whom he met in Florence, as well as his wonderful children and grandchildren, of whom he was immensely proud.
Jim was like a big brother to me. He often spoke fondly of his closest friends, Kenny and Mitch, and through knowing them, I came to appreciate how carefully and thoughtfully he chose the people in his life. At rheumatology conferences, we shared many joyful meals with Kenny, filled with laughter. I later came to know Mitch, a man with an extraordinarily generous heart. On Tuesdays, when Jim went out for oysters with Mitch, he made sure the entire office knew. Two years ago, when I attended a rheumatology conference in Milan, Jim was very intentional about ensuring that Mitch would be our guide in Lake Como and Bellagio.
One of the most touching aspects of Jim’s life was the devotion he showed to his mother, Doria. When he brought her to the office, the care he gave her was unforgettable. He held her hand, helped her with her coat, and gently assisted her from her wheelchair. After every treatment, he would sincerely thank me for taking care of his mother. His love and respect for her reflected the depth of his character.
I never imagined I would have to write these words. Jim will be deeply missed as a partner, as an exceptional physician, and as a true friend. His kindness, humor, wisdom, and generosity of spirit will remain with us always.
My sincere condolences to his entire family. May his memory be a blessing.

I never thought I would be writing this and it is truly very hard. He was a man of many names. Germano, his true name,Jimmy as his family called him and Sam as many friends knew him. He used to tell a story and he had plenty of hilarious heart felt stories that a date's mother called to her daughter that Geronomo Guacamole is here for you. Sam came about as when his family moved from Brooklyn to Secaucus everyone had a different name in the class and they already had a Jimmy so had to be Sam. He was always so good natured that he went along with it and even used it with future friends. I met him in Italy when we were studying medicine and have known him ever since. He was like a brother to me. He was big hearted, sincere, caring, quick to laugh and to find humor in the world. Someone you truly enjoyed being around. Though he was a regular person, he was multifaceted. He was an avid reader and well versed in history, mythology, art history classical music and that's not to mention his scientific side as a very accomplished rheumatologist. Truly a man of all seasons. Knowing him made your life better and happier. I will truly miss my very dear friend Sam. Kenny Crager
