Nancy Hornyak

Obituary of Nancy Hornyak

Nancy (DeMasi) Hornyak, Age 91, of Bridgeport, CT, widow of the late John J. Hornyak, Sr., passed away on December 14, 2025 in the comfort of her own home with loving family members by her side.

Nancy was born on March 24, 1934, in Bridgeport, CT, to the late Antonio and Anna (Imitazione) DeMasi. She was married to her late husband in 1955 and became a full-time Homemaker, raising their four children.

In earlier years, Nancy was a longtime volunteer at Blackman School, where her children all attended.  In 1974, she became a member of the Bridgeport Board of Education, on which she proudly served for twenty-seven years. She served with great compassion and concern for all students in the Bridgeport School System.

Nancy then became a Police Commissioner for the City Of Bridgeport Police Department, another position in which she took great pride.

Over her many years, Nancy loved hosting family gatherings and playing Pinochle with relatives, and also with her longtime neighborhood friends. She also enjoyed her frequent trips to Las Vegas and several trips to Puerto Rico with her daughters and their spouses.

Nancy will be missed for her infectious laugh, huge dimples and incredible memory of reciting, on a daily basis, the birthdays, anniversaries and special occasions of almost every person she had ever met, which was quite amazing!  Mostly, Nancy will be greatly missed by her devoted daughters, Paula, Claudia Zahorsky (Laurie Weinstein), and Cynthia Rivera (Luis).  She also leaves behind her beloved and adored grandchildren, David Zahorsky, Jr., Emily Zahorsky, Shane Zahorsky (Amanda), Brett Zahorsky and her precious great granddaughter, Ava Lilly Zahorsky.

Nancy was also blessed to hold the honorary title of “Nanny” to Hunter Bisciglia Sigona and Gabriela Bisciglia Sigona, both of whom brought so much love and many cherished memories to Nanny, Pop-Pop and the entire Hornyak family.

Nancy is also survived by two sisters, Anna DeMasi and Jean Fisher, several nieces, nephews and a host of everlasting friends.

In addition to her husband, Nancy was predeceased by her beloved son, John J. Hornyak, Jr., siblings, Mary Carey, Edith Masuli, Nicolina Rizzitelli, Frank DeMasi and Joseph DeMasi.

At the request of the family, there will be no calling hours and Internment will be private.
