Obituary of Joseph Cerdeira

Joseph Cerdeira, age 82, of Bridgeport, beloved husband of Elsy Simon Cerdeira, passed away peacefully on Friday, December 4, 2025 with his loving family by his side. Born in Canedo, Ribeira de Pena, Portugal on August 14, 1943, he was a son of the late Faustino and Teresa Matos Cerdeira. Along with his family, they immigrated to the United States in the early 1970's, settling in Bridgeport. Joe was a retired employee of the City of Bridgeport Public Works/Sanitation Department, having over 25 years of dedicated service before his retirement. He was also a school crossing guard for 20 years. Joe was a member of the Vasco da Gama Club, where he enjoyed spending time with his friends and was well loved by all. He loved to cook, take care of his vegetable garden, write songs, antique cars, listened to rancho folklore Portuguese music, and looked forward to spending his summers in Portugal. He lived his life fully, right to the very end, with courage, calm, and not a single worry on his mind. In addition to his beloved wife of 44 years, Elsy, survivors include his loving children, a son, Robert Cerdeira and a daughter, Janette Cerdeira, an adored grandson Jayden Joseph Cerdeira, his siblings, two sisters, Maria Meireles and her husband Albino Meireles of Ludlow MA and Celeste Rodrigues of France, a brother Antonio Cerdeira and his wife Virginia Cerdeira of Estoril Portugal, nieces and nephews, Isabelle, Nadine, Fred, Paul, Susana, Manuela, Joe, Pedro, Cristina, Catarina, Antonio and many great nieces and great nephews. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, December 18, 2025 at 10:00 a.m. directly in Our Lady of Fatima Church, 429 Huntington Rd., Bridgeport. Interment will be private at the convenience of the family. At Joe's request, there will be no calling hours.
