He was heavily involved as a volunteer in many local organizations, including the Knights of Columbus as past Grand Knight, the Connecticut Burns Care Foundation, where he was honored with a lifetime achievement award in 2019, and the Bridgeport Police Activities League, where he dressed up as Santa Claus for many Christmas celebrations.
In addition to his cherished wife of 67 years, Jean, whom he called "Honeygirl", survivors include his three loving children: Mary Beth Nemergut and her husband Ed, James Czajkowski and his wife Claudia, and Jeanine Santilli and her husband Vincent, six adored grandchildren: Joseph, Mara, and Thomas Santilli, Anna Nemergut, and Aleksandra and James Czajkowski Jr., a brother, Paul Czajkowski, two uncles, Joseph Kay and Edward Kay, very dear extended family members, Diane Santilli and Kevin Aylward, as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.
