Obituary of Douglas F. Gentile

In Loving Memory of Douglas Gentile
August 18, 1942 – September 11, 2025

Douglas Gentile, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 11, 2025 at the age of 83. Born and raised in the North End of Bridgeport, Doug’s life was a testament to devotion—devotion to family, to faith, and to the countless lives he touched with his gentle spirit.

Doug attended Madison School, Central High School, and graduated from the University School of Bridgeport. He proudly served in the US Army National Guard, HHC 242 Combat Engineers, receiving an honorable discharge in 1965. On September 2, 1967, he married the love of his life, Laura, and together they built a life grounded in mutual respect, learning, and unwavering love. They graduated side by side from Housatonic Community College in 1972.

Doug’s pursuit of knowledge continued with a Bachelor of Science from Southern Connecticut State University in 1975, followed by a Master’s Degree in Counselor Education in 1977. In 1991, he earned his PhD from Vision Christian University, deepening his lifelong commitment to spiritual growth and service.

He spent his career with the United States Postal Service, where he formed lasting friendships and was known for his kindness and integrity. Doug had a gentle voice and a kind word for all—his presence was a comfort, his words a balm.

Doug loved his family with all his heart. He was endlessly proud of his son Jason and his grandchildren, Claire and Paige, often sharing stories of their achievements, but most of all, celebrating the kindness in their spirits. He cherished every moment of togetherness, often saying how wonderful it would be “just to be together.”

Doug is survived by his wife of 58 years, Laura; his son Jason Gentile; his two grandchildren, Claire and Paige; his sister Rosalyn Florentino and her husband Donald of Trumbull; and several beloved nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Frank and Rose (Borrelli) Gentile, he was also predeceased by his daughter-in-law, Kelsey Gentile.

A man of deep faith, Doug held a lifelong devotion to God the Father, Jesus Christ, and the Blessed Holy Spirit. He studied the Word of God with reverence and was always available to pray with and for others, especially those who were sick or grieving. He found joy in family celebrations, prayer groups, work gatherings, and church fellowship. He felt honored whenever asked to lead a prayer, and he did so with humility and love.

Doug loved his life—and in loving it, he enriched the lives of everyone around him. His legacy is one of compassion, wisdom, and unwavering faith.

A celebration of Doug’s life will be held on Monday, September 15, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. in the Abriola Parkview Funeral Home, 419 White Plains Rd., Trumbull. Entombment will follow in the Garden Mausoleum of St. Michael Cemetery, Stratford. Friends may greet the family at the funeral home on Monday morning from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 200 Executive Blvd. Suite 4B, Southington, CT 06489 (www.alz.org/ct) in honor of Doug’s enduring spirit and devotion.
