Obituary of Vincent A. Gentile

Vincent A. Gentile, age 91, of North Haven, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, August 19, 2025 at Yale New Haven Hospital at St. Raphael's campus surrounded by his loving family. Born in Bridgeport on November 12, 1933, Vincent was the son of the late Vincent and Mary (Santolino) Gentile, the beloved husband of Mary Guzzardi Gentile, and a longtime resident of Stratford, Conn., and Naples, Fla.

Vincent was a graduate of Fairfield College Preparatory School and the University of Bridgeport, where he received his undergraduate, master's, and sixth year degrees. He played on the UB basketball team and was always proud to tell the story of his 17-point game at Boston Garden. Vincent was honored to serve in the United States Army at the Pentagon during the Korean War. After his service, he went on to begin his long and rewarding teaching career and retired in 1992 from Monroe Public Schools, where he had developed many relationships and touched the lives of so many students. He and his wife Mary enjoyed traveling and spending winters together at their condo in Naples. He was a golf enthusiast and won many golf championships as well as playing softball for many years. His love of sports also included being an avid fan of the New York Yankees and following both the men and women's UConn basketball teams. He had an appreciation for all music and loved singing karaoke and dancing. Being a voracious reader, he was lovingly deemed a "Master of Trivial Information" by friends and family. Vincent was also known for his generosity. He always kept others in his prayers, including family pets, and never hesitated to pick up the phone and check in on loved ones. Most of all, Vincent had an immense love for his family, which was the most important part of his life. He cherished the time he spent with family on holidays and at family gatherings. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, and his memory will live on in the hearts of all who loved him.

In addition to Mary, his beloved wife of 65 years, he is survived by two children, Michael Gentile and his wife Marianne, and Lisa Tunucci and her husband Peter; five grandchildren, Nicole Zacarelli, Steven Gentile and his wife Angela, Andrew Gentile, Gabi Tunucci and Mia Tunucci; and three cherished great grandchildren, Orlagh, Anya and Henry.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, August 25, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. directly in St. Mark Church, 500 Wigwam Ln., Stratford. Interment with Full Military Honors will follow in Lakeview Cemetery, Bridgeport. Friends may greet the family on Sunday from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. in the Abriola Parkview Funeral Home, 419 White Plains Rd., Trumbull.
