Obituary of Katherine Georgiou

Katherine “Kathy” Georgiou of Bridgeport, CT died peacefully in her sleep on Saturday, July 12. She was 85 years old. Katherine was born in the coastal village of Ermioni, Greece in 1939 to Andreanos and Marika Golemas. Living through World War Two as a small child with her mother and three sisters, she moved to New York City in 1945, where she and her family reunited with her father. She spent her early life in the city, close to her mother and three sisters, all of whom are predeceased: Lucy Kaltsas, Tessie Robbokos, and twin sister Tina Jordanopoulos. She graduated from George Washington High School in 1958, and in 1962 met her husband, Christos Georgiou. They married and eventually settled in Bridgeport with their children.

She began her career in retail later in life, spending her happiest working years at JC Penney in the Trumbull Mall. She prided herself on her work, and enjoyed socializing with her colleagues and customers. After retiring, she settled into a quiet life at home, where she spent her days caring for her garden of roses, spending time with her family, and cooking and baking her most cherished Greek dishes and desserts.

Kathy is survived by her loving husband, Christos Georgiou; her three children, Georgia Iossa and her husband Sam, John Georgiou and his wife Jenny, and Marika Sagnella and her husband Peter. “Yia Yia” is also survived by her six grandchildren: Joseph Iossa, Christina (Iossa) Mollica, Will Sagnella, James Sagnella, Henry Sagnella, and Katherine Georgiou. She is survived as well by two great grandchildren, Rhea Mollica and Cirilla Mollica, and many nieces and nephews.
