Obituary of Artur Monteiro
Artur Fernandes Monteiro, age 77, of Monroe, passed away peacefully on Friday, May 16, 2025, at St. Vincent's Medical Center, surrounded by his loving family. He was the beloved husband of the late Maria Emilia Monteiro. Born on September 18, 1947, in Sanjurge, Chaves, Portugal, Artur was the son of the late Antonio and Laura Fernandes Monteiro.
A proud veteran of the Portuguese Army, he immigrated to the United States in 1979, living in Bridgeport for 27 years before settling in Monroe, where he has lived for the past 19 years. Artur retired from Bridgeport Machines and also worked for Derecktor Shipyards. Known for his strong work ethic, he carried that same dedication into everything he did.
He was an avid outdoorsman who loved hunting, but he was especially known for his remarkable garden and homemade wine. Artur grew lettuce year-round and was renowned for his impressively large pumpkins and tomatoes. He took great pride in sharing his harvest with family and friends. A longtime Vasco da Gama Club member, Artur enjoyed spending time with friends, reminiscing about his homeland, and cheering for his favorite soccer teams, FC Porto and Grupo Desportivo de Chaves.
Above all, Artur was a devoted family man. He selflessly prioritized the well-being of his loved ones and found his greatest joy in spending time with his grandchildren. His unwavering love, generosity, and kindness will remain in the hearts of all who knew him.
He was predeceased by his wife and three infant children: Artur Jr., Emilia (Milinha), and Utilia.
Artur is survived by his devoted daughter, Cristina Monteiro, and her husband Carlos; his cherished grandchildren, Timothy and Tiffany; his siblings, Jose Monteiro and his wife Mabilda, Celina Simoes and her husband Antonio, Teresa Monteiro and her husband Antonio, Elisa Crespo and her husband Jack, and Fernando Monteiro and his wife Laidinha; as well as his brother- and sisters-in-laws, Joao Crespo, Felisbina Oliveira and her husband Jack, and Fatima Crespo and her husband Stephen Bukowski.
